Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, PageMaker,

Illustrator and Photoshop are for design and can be used to output to film or print. Indesign and PageMaker are DTP software to put all these elements together for print or film production.

I measured the size of the case and made the canvas that size in photoshop. Then just printed out. works a treat.

I have found that if I put a label o the dvd disc it will no longer play, or it is very jumpy. No label, no problem. Go figure!

did you put it on the right side.. heh j/k

seriously though there was a guy in my work ordered a whole sound colection of bbc sound effects.. about 100cds and about 10 times the price..

he then proceeded to engrave everyone of them the the department name. then complained to us (another department for technical help) that they wouldnt play anymore.

it does happen.

I've had similar experiences with paper labels on DVDs. They just stop working. But, by chance I decided to give a try to clear labels a couple of months ago. They've never caused a problem yet. It don't think it is because they are clear as much as the light weight.

jdobbs,

what's a clear label? Where did you buy them?

Thanks.

A clear label is formatted for inkjet or laser printing just like the paper ones so it will work with CD Stomper, Neato, etc. but the label itself is similar in thickness and feel to Scotch transparent tape. There are lots of places that sell them. I usually get them at a local computer show but have bought them at department stores (Target) in the past.

Do a web search for "clear cd labels", here are a couple of online places that have them:

http://www.compuforms.com/cd_inkjet.htm
http://www.pcconnection.com/scripts/productdetail.asp?product_id=124239

Please note I don't know anything about these companies, their products, or prices -- I just grabbed a couple of the first ones that showed when I did a search.

Has anyone else had bad experiences with dvd disc labels. I was looking to do this myself, but not if the dvd won't play.

I too have had this problem. I use the regular paper with matte finish labels for CDrs, VCDs, and SVCDs without a hitch. But as soon as I apply one to a DVD-R it's finished!

This has happened with CDRecordables, Ritek, Prodisc, and even (yikes) Apple discs. The last disc I tried labeling was an Apple disc, and after it became instantly corrupted, I then used Bestine solvent to remove the label (which you probably should never do, but at that point I had nothing to lose) and the disc played absolutely fine again. WTF?

Now I print on the center "dot" leftover from normal CD labels, carefully apply it to the center of the DVD-R, and cut the hole out with a razor blade!

I have the A03 (not upgraded firmware), and Pioneer DV-343 standalone.

all the time, 3 DVD's of home videos with Neato labels. no problem in Pineer DV444....

You guys using Neato labels?

Thanks amirkhan, I'll have to try those. Been using CD Stomper Pro matte finish labels. So inexpensive, and seem a bit thinner than the ones Avery makes.

I also plan on trying those clear labels jdobbs suggested. ;)

Geeze! Sometimes I think I must be the luckiest guy in the world to not have all these problems people report. hehe ;) I've used the Fellowes Neato high-gloss labels (some with ink completely covering it in case you're wondering about weight) and I've had no problems at all playing my discs. All of my DVDR's are the cdrecordable.com cheap-o's.

Something else you guys might want to check is what you're using to apply them. It is REAL easy to have discs thrown out of balance with a label that is just *slightly* off-center. I have an applicator that came with my Neato kit and it drops the disc *directly* down on the label. It's never off-center. Just an idea.

seems the common thread is

Neato (+tacky applicator) = works
Everything else = does not

There you have it folks..

I've been using some 'clear' CD labels from data-labels.com with great sucess. They are ultra-thin and slighty translucent. They weight almost nothing, so no wobble problems! And they really look great, most people can't tell the difference between my DVD's and the original. About $50 for 200 labels.

I scan the original DVD (or download a copy from www.cdcovers.cc), layout and printout with PageMaker on my Epson C60. End result, awesome label and a DVD-r that plays perfect.

Dannio,

Where do you get labels? $50 for 200 is a good price.

Here's the link - http://www.data-labels.com/neatclearcdl.html

They are made for Injet only, they dry very quickly.

padre,

Thanks much. I think I'll order some, I ran out recently and all I could find in a pinch was the glossy clear labels (Avery) at Staples. They work, but they're a real pain to apply without bubbles.

Are you guys talking about the Neato 2000 labler or the normal Neato labeler that is cheaper?

Mosaic
28th May 2002, 03:28
Ok folks...its real simple.....

a) Centre the label properly ....offcentre = wobbly disc.

b) MAKE SURE u ain't got bubbles.....its hard to see a bubble if its a shallow one ....and they usually are shallow & spread out.

If u got such a bubble then at the speed the disc is spinning ya gonna get an aeroynamic effect called LIFT....cause the DVD-R (around the bubble) has been given a crossection like an air plane wing.
This means MAJOR wobble...and naturally the laser can't track it.

BUBBLE fix....if ya got a bubble ya can't squeeze out ...use a pin and prick it...then squeeze the air out.

Once u unbalance the disc its gonna give probs. Thinner/lighter labels are therefore better to use.

The twit who engraved his discs actually cut off material from the disc ...making em unbalanced. If the disc gives probs...take off the label....isoprpyl alcohol does it....and put a new one.

These are normal Neato labels, not the 2000 or Pro. It's the standard Neato format, I actually use my Stomper applicator and it works perfectly.

I have never seen cd labels yet that don't start to peel off after a while. You sure this is a good idea? I'd hate to have my whole DVD collection ruined after a couple of years (or less)

padre
29th May 2002, 22:37
Well, let's see - I've only been using them for about 2 months....ask me again in a couple of years and I'll tell you if they lasted that long without peeling...:D

Well Padre, did they?
Another tool you can use is CoverXP and for some Portuguese covers go HERE (www.dvdtodvdr.cjb.net)

No peeling so far! The clear ones from CompuLabel seem to be holding up after over 1 year. So far, so good.

I have had problems with paper labels as well. Used CD Stomper lables on cd's forever, never had any problems.

Made a wedding video DVD for family, and then stupid me, I tested all the DVD's before putting labels on them, because I didn't want to waste the ink and labels if they didn't work. All of the DVD's worked perfectly, labeld them up and sent them out.

Of course (as I am sure you have all guessed by now) I ended up getting lots of complaints from family members. Main problem was that the buffer would run out, the picture would freeze for a second or two, then continue. It would do this at random times and places.

First I thought it might have been media, but I was using good media, and never had problems with them in the past. After rebuilding the stupid DVD, and reburning over and over, finally realized it was the lables. Sent out a new batch with felt tip pen written on the surface of the disk rather than a label. Doesn't look nearly as good, but at least they can play them :D

I need to try some other label solutions.

I've been using http://www.yesbuy.net/cddonlabmatp.html on DVD-Rs with no issues. $13.00 for 200 of them, you can't go wrong. I agree that alot of the problems people are having are due to bad application of the labels more than likely.

Actually, a funny thing happened when I ordered those labels from Yesbuy... instead of sending 200 labels, they sent me a case of packages of 200 labels (i.e. 2000 labels). They told me their loss was my gain... so its a good thing they worked out for me so well ;) because I haven't bought labels again for a year or so.

Does anybody here have experience with the Epson Stylus Photo 900?
It's a $200 inkjet that'll print on (printable) CDs and DVDs. Most
of the DVDs I've used labels on have gone wonky after six months or
so, so I want to avoid the whole issue.

I only read a few comments at the top and got a little worried.

My Spanish friend's daughter loves Shrek ... he gave it to me to copy and as I was sitting on their couch his daughter was giving me all kinds of attention ... he told me it's because she sees the Shrek disk in my hand ... Shrek has Spanish language and Subtitles.

Anyways ... I used my scanner and made a copy of the Shrek DVD label and it plays fine on my JVC 500BK series DVD player.

I used DVD Shrink 2.3 to dupe the DVD.

I used Neato v4.0

Sincerely ... Mach10

I use Rayfilm labels (link (http://www.rayfilm.cz/uk/index.php3)) and so far no problem at all. I use them more than 3 months and all my backups work flawlessly.

Hey guys, I've been burnin movies on DVD-R's with my Pioneer 106 like crazy and didnt know about the wobble problem at the end of the disc with thick neato labels until a couple of weeks ago. I was only checking the beginning of the discs, and then when I really started watching a couple of them, I noticed this horrible skipping problem at the last 10 to 15 minutes of the movies. Now I switched to wobble free clear labels from americal.com (I'm sure they can be found cheaper somewhere else) and dloaded there free printing template and print strait from photoshop, they WORK GREAT, no skip. I guess the other solution is to not use labels like my brother... But how boring is that!
