I have been using the purple dvd-r from Meritline and they work fine for about the first hour and then they start skipping and locking up, and it seems that other people have had problems also and I now have some princos on order and will have them tomorrow, I previous post they said that the apple brand media seems to work well. I am going to order some of them later. I have an Apex set top player and Memorex and TDK brand have worked fine for me but are too expensive.

Yes, I just bought a couple of Princo DVD-R's, and must say, they pretty suck!
first I burned a movie to DVD-RW for testing, and it played back perfectly!
Then I burned it on Princo DVD-R, and suddendly noticed strange pixelating effects.
But another movie 'Rambo' just play fine with Princo.
It's definatly the media.

What media have you had the best results with??? The meritline purple ones seem to be fine for the first 80 minutes and then it is unwatchable for the remainder of the movie. As long as I backup a movie on two dvd then I have no problems with the purple ones. That makes the price about five dollars, so I might as well buy good media from the start.

I have notice something very strange !!!
When using cheap media (DVD-R's from Princo, Gold unbranded, Meritline, etc.), you should not use HIGH BITRATE encoded material (9000 Kbps with 3 or 4 languages,and/or 3 or 4 subtitles). That makes a lot of skips and locks, especially at the end of the disk. However if you re-encode your movie to to a lower bitrate (4000-6000 Kbps) they work perfectly even at the end of the DVD-R...

what if you don't record movies with different languages or subtitles??I only keep the movie with no sub or menus.. Which method of reencoding do you use??

I found this site selling the DVD-R media for $2.20 and since I found it I have purchased 2 of the 100 packs from them. The quality is great, they are very sturdy and I have not had one fail yet. Play in all standalones I tried and played well in ps2.
Here is the site I found in case anyone would like to know:

To record without the extra languages and/or subtitles you can use Ifoedit. For re-encoding I use the DVD2AVI/TMPGEnc method, then you can use an authoring program to mux again your new video with your audio(s) and/or sub(s)...

Movieguru,
I bought a set of 20 DVD-r's from that site you mentioned (judysdeals) and they work great!! I was having the same problem others were with the DVDPRO (purple) from Meritline. The first couple of chapters worked fine, then garbage! Every one of judysdeals dvd-r's have worked just fine in all players.
Thanks for the tip!

padre, how many movies have you burned with the judysdeals media? What are you playing them back on?
I made the mistake of ordering 25 Princos that have been absolutley horrible. As a test I created an image file, and burned 3 copies of it. The first copy played for about 70 minutes, then started skipping an pixelating once every minute or so, getting more and more frequent as time passed till it eventually just froze. One of the other copies would start to play, then give an error, and the last copy refused to even play! what crap.
Anyone have anymore feedback about the judysdeals media? Consistency, player compatability, etc???
I have a feeling that TheMovieGuru may be affiliated with judysdeals, so I'd really like to see some more feedback before I take the plunge!
thanks all

first of all I have an APEX AD-500WM Stand alone from Wal-Mart the purple ones from Meritline did what your movies are doing, I can use the purple ones for the movies that take two dvd to copy and seem to do fine, as long as I don't cross the 80 minute mark or so, after that they are bad. I bought some Princo silver from QTC COMPUTER SYSTEMS and they seem to do fine so far with my stand alone. I will let you know if I start having problems with them also

Hmm... I bought 4 Princo discs to test them out, all burned fine and playback perfectly on my Sony 7700, my PC and my new Toshiba 210.
I have since bought 25 more Princo discs and so far have had no problems at all.

Bluespot,
I've made about 20 DVDs so far with Judysdeals media and everyone works great. I've tested them in my PC, standalone Samsung DV1000, Apex 1500 and Apex 3201. I've only had problems with 1 not playing in my JVC XV-S65 player, but that player gives me problems with standard DVDs, so not too concerned.
I've also bought a small batch (10) from QTCCDR.com and they seem to work just fine as well. I have one more batch to test, from cdrecordable.com (included a couple of 9.4gb doublesided). I'll post my results.
I was about to order some Princo's when I saw a bunch of negative posts about results with them. I had bought some Meritline DVDPro (purple) media and had bad results with any DVD larger than 3gb.

Well, I started testing the media I bought from cd-recordable.com and have mixed results. One of the two double-sided (9.4gb) media purchased were defective. I'm guessing it has something to do with the nasty stain on one side of the media. It appears that when the shipped the media, they didn't protect it from moisture.
I also had one of the single-sided regular DVD-r's failed too, and yup, that was the disc on the other side of the packaged. Seems the two were exposed to the elements while in shipping or sitting outside my house waiting for pickup. It was only outside for an hour or so, no rain, in the upper 40's , low 50's.
All of the other media I've received (from Judysdeals, QTC, Meritline) have been well packaged to protect from the elements.
Just something for everyone to think about when ordering mail order. Consider their packaging.
