I have a DVD movie that is 6Gb in size, it has no subtitles or additional languages that I can remove. The film is just big. Anyone know how I can fit this on to a single layer DVD?

Take a look at doom9's DVD-DVD guides (especially the Basic one and the IfoEdit & CCE guide). It tells how to re-encode your movie to fit on a single layer DVD....

...but its not multiangle. Its got one language and has no subtitles.

So re-encode it with lower bitrate so it will fit on a single DVD-R...

I have found that using TMPGE (if it is a really long movie) at about 3000CBR works great. It does take a long time though (average 8 hours for a 2 hour movie). Also, I have good luck by splitting the Audio and Video portions and authoring with DVDit. The thing to be careful of here is that the version that comes with the Pioneer will not accept 16x9 size. So, knowing this can save you a lot of time encoding something that you cannot use. If you want the 16x9 size, best to encode the whole thing (audio/video) to an mpeg file first. Just remember that the DVD authoring program is going to split them anyway....taking a little more time.
There are very good guides on this site and also vcdhelp. A good rule of thumb for size is that if the mpg (or audio/video) combined should be less than 4.4gig to burn on the Pioneer.
Hope this helps.
