For those interested, the HP DVD+W (DVD100i) is currently being cleared out to make way for the next model (HP200i). It can be found at TigerDirect.com for $299.99 or Ecost for $339.99. This can (should be able) to be 110% pricmatched to Staples and maybe even lower if you can get the CSR to add a coupon on top of the PM. It's important to not that this model ONLY does DVD+RW and WILL NEVER do DVD+R (probably at least). DVD+RW aren't too compatible with current set top boxes and are more expensive, but some people might want this.

I wrote the same on Tom's Hardware Guide forums.

Personaly after the IMHO bad conduct shown in selling the old drives to people who expected them to burn to DVD+R and looking forward for HP not to exist any more in the 6 month range (Another Compaq devision) I see very little point in buying a trully old and non functioning model.

Yeah, some people might be interested in this model, especially if your uses aren't for backing up movies, but to have a 4.7gb storage medium that's rewritable. But with the cost of DVD+RW against the DVD-RW (i've seen it for $3 per disc) i don't see the point.

You can get the Pioneer 103 for 350$ as well. DVD-RW media price is lower then the DVD+RW and you get the option to use DVD-R that is more video compatible with set-top players.

Personaly I don't see any reason why some one will not spend 50$ more on a DVR drive that can do much more.

Well, I agree, but the panasonic doesn't do DVD-RW, only DVD-R and DVD-RAM. Also if you work for a place that resells HP equipment there is a way you can get the HP drive for free. You have to sign up with some HP incentives website then apply a rebate they'll give you. The details on this can be found on anandtech hot deals forums.

I would never get HP's "DVD+RW Drive". I read Microsoft took the DVD+RW side cuz they didn't want HP to cry.:D
