I have been using xmpeg 4.2 for several months making perfect rips every time.Recently I added a creative soundblaster audigy platinum and a hewlitt packard 1115 printer which added a drive letter because of the card reader. Then i noticed my dvd player would only play data and music cd's but not dvd's.It's a pioneer 106s,so I upgraded the firmware to version 1.22.Now it plays dvd's again but xmpeg freezes about 30% thru the second pass.I checked the vob files and they are good.Ialso upgraded to version4.31 and the same thing happens.GKnot works fine but the files come out larger than I like. has anyone else encountered this problem?

Overheating. Rip DVD on the hard drive first and try again.

That's what I'm doing. I have a digital doc 5 to keep track of the temperature and its fine and xmpeg worked fine before loading the audigy platinum and the firmware upgrade for my pioneer 106s dvd.

I mean temperature of DVD rom, not CPU. I had some problems with DVD rom (Xmpeg 4.31 frezes because DVD overheats & stop responding) so I start to rip on hard disk every time & everything is fine now.
Second - how many vobs is the movie. Known bug of Xmpeg is that it crashes if they are more than 6.
And last: Did you remove old Xmpeg or upgrade over it. I remove all first - install 4.30 - install 4.31 over it(because of ifo parsing).

If you can calculate exactly where it's crashing (very possible), check if it's crashing right on the border between two vob files. I once had that problem, and solved it by merging two of the files.

Example- if it crashes after #2:
VTS_05_1.VOB 1GB
VTS_05_2.VOB 1Gb Merge this file
VTS_05_3.VOB 1Gb with this one
VTS_05_4.VOB 1Gb -rename this one

VTS_05_1.VOB 1Gb
VTS_05_2.VOB 2Gb
VTS_05_3.VOB 1Gb

I'm not sure how it helped, or why I thought to do that. Another thing to figure out is if this happens with only this DVD, or many DVD's (if many, is it consistently crashing... where?)

Maybe this helps, maybe not. good luck. Oh, and sometimes the HP computers require that the DVD is the first non-hard drive letter in the series. Rename the printer flash drive to something like Z:

I'm using DVD Decrypter to rip the vob files to my hard drive and the there are anywhere from 4 to 8 vob files.I have tried about six different dvd's and the same thing happens every time.
I uninstalled the old version of xmpeg before upgrading.

It worked perfectly before adding the audigy and the hewlitt packard
printer. The dvd drive letter is G and the card reader is H.

It looks like it may be freezing between vob files. How do you merge the vob files?

use smartripper and only have new VOBs just before 4 gig.
