I just bought a JVC DVD Player and checked VCDHelper web site and people said they had luck with it supporting DVD-RW but they must have had a different firmware and I doubt JVC XV-SA75GD puts there firmware on the website for download.
So I want to get a good DVD player that plays DVD-RW and MP3 cds. Can you please list in this thread if you have one that you can verify plays DVD-RW.
BTW- I used a good quality Pioneer Ver 1.1 DVD-RW when testing.

I'd go with Mikeathome - the Pioneer 444 reads DVD-RW just fine and is also a damn fine player to boot. I bought one for exactly the same reason as you.

Do like me: burn a DVD-RW and try it in differents shops which sell DVD Video players. You'll see that's players reading well DVD-RW are Pioneer's players: DV-444,343 etc.....
Solution: buy a Pioneer (444 the best)

It is true most Pioneer will play DVD-RW. The 444 is a nice player although the progressive scan sucks. If you need progressive scan, try the Toshiba SD-4700. Nice progressive picture with RANDOM PLAY on mp3s (most players don't support this) DOES NOT play SVCD however. I'm sure the 444 does. Just my $.02

My Apex 500wm plays the 'un-branded' DVD-RW's ( i think the brand is actually DVD-Pro). Havent tried any other brands yet, but the player costed $89, and it plays mp3s, vcd, svcd, dvd-r/rw....even if it dosnt last 10 years, thats definately worth the cash. If your choosey though, I'd take "dlrfg's" advice and take a few test dvd's that can play in your computers Rom drive ok to the store and try em out till you find a happy player...thats the only way to foolproof your own methods and at the same time test different brand discs and players. You can only trust someone else's opinion to an extent...

Don't know what part of the world your in but if in the UK you could do a lot worse than a Dansai 852 from Tesco ( I know it's a noname make lol) but this thing is amazing here are some features:
muti region (straight out of the box by entering the special menu, I have the details if anybody needs them)
will play audio CD/DVD/DVDR/DVDRW/VideoCD/SVCD/Minidvd/MP3 including random play and will also play mpegs burnt as a data disc, so far I have not found anything that this machine can't play
so far I have tried 6 diferent brands of DVDR from the cheap ones to the expensive pioneer ones, all play fine.
And to add insult to injury it cost under £90
go figure!

-- Apex 660 plays DVD-RW after a firmware upgrade to the drive, but with occasional delays at startup.
-- Apex 1500 ($79 at Circuit City) plays DVD-RW out of the box.
Neither support progressive scan or have component outputs. But they are very inexpensive and are quite versatile. Also support Mp3, SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW.

Thanks to all of you for your contributions.
I will try some of these players in the stores and see which one I like the best.
I hate to give up on the JVC because I really like its MP3 support with 33 character filename support, but I really need DVD-RW for proofing of my DVDs.

TYT 2000 & clones play them, but some people reported mistakes.
In some time there will be a really reliable report....
Only DVD+RW has not been tested yet.
A lot players are TYT2000-clones...
The drive/loader in them is
company: DVS (Korea)
type: DSL 710 A
Best ones are the ones with older loader, with FW LO series, can be updated to LO15.
LT series is reported, updateable to LT33
In newer TYT-clones you do not find DVS DSL 710A anymore. Another new brand.
Perhaps not so well....
