To all svcdiers,

I already read the Q&A for dvd2svcd so far i can't find the answer im looking for. My question is what bitrate should i use with CBR to compete with a multipass 4 with an average of 1800?? Is 2000 bitrate good enough?? or does it have to be 2560 bitrate to compete with multipass 4 or greater?

The reason i want to use cbr is because my puter is slow. But if i want to use CBR i want to make the most out of it. I dont care bout the number of cds all i want is get the a "reasonable quality encode" using cbr.

thanks

2200 CBR or greater should be sufficient in my opinion. Of course spread it out over as many CDs to get that bitrate. I also always use TemporalSmoother(2,1) and no anti-noise.

You may want to experiment because 1Pass VBR with the minimum average at 2200, minimum bitrate at 1200 or so, and the maximum bitrate at 2500, with Q. 4 or 5, with TemporalSmoother(2,1). It will give comparable results and allow the bitrate to go up to 2500 when there is a lot of action or the scene is complicated in otherr ways.

To sandchar99,

Thanks for the reply. :)

So this setting ur saying:

Max. Bitrate 2500
Min Bitrate 1200
Min Average 2200
Q of 4
TS 2,1
1 pass

Will this beat a multipass of 4 with bitrate average of 1600-1800??

Another question what value should i put on Max Ave?? or do i leave it as default??

Thank you...

You're welcome. I find them comparable. However, people with high res TVs, large TVs, etc may have different opinions. I use a 27" Sony.

Max average should be set ~98 less than Max Bitrate (when doing 1 Pass VBR) as there had previously been problems with CCE, I think. It does not matter for CBR but if you are spreading it out over more CDs to max out the quality, your audio + video should not be more than 2723 unless you know that your player can play out of spec SVCD.

A word of warning. I think it safe to say that forum moderators/readers appreciate it when you have done your homework first. Do some tests. Rip a sample chapter to your hard drive and run it thru DVD2SVCD trying different settings. Instead of making an image using VCDXBuild, set it for "do not create images" and take the resulting muxed MPEGs and burn them all on one CD using VCDEasy. You'll end up with several "chapters" of the same chapter and you'll be able to compare them yourself, using your own equipment.
