View Full Version : DVD2DVD-R ? Hack perhaps?

Just been playing with DVD2SVCD and its a very good package but how about the same package for DVD-Rs. ReMPEG does NOT cut the mustard and it would be great to be able to take a DVD and produce a set of files that could be written to a DVD-R (by reducing bit rate and dropping non-English/other language as desired) keeping menus etc?
I know U can use ifoEDIT for stripping but quite often you have to re-encode and having the all-in-one front end like DVD2SVCD would be cool.
Anyone else want this? Could we change DVD2SVCD with a hack or does it need a new program?

Not bad !!

I highly doubt it would be able to be done with a hack. There is too much different between the two formats.

I have been using DVD2SVCD to burn avi files onto DVD-R, but I think that DVDs should work just the same.
It is actually quite easy, though it still takes a while. The only options different from usualy are that:
1. I don't delete any files (check box somewhere)
2. Edit the Avisynth Script (again check box somewhere)
3. Don't downsample 48 -> 44.1
In the Avisynth edit box I change the resolution to 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL). I am currently trying to work out the resolutions and which borders to add for widescreen film formats (1:2.35, 16:9 etc).
Also I stop the whole process just as BBMPG starts as I require the 2 separate files .m2v and .mp2. Not the .mpg.
These 2 files can be imported directly into Spruceup DVD, (rename .mp2 to .mpa).
I have had quite good results putting 2 movies onto 1 DVD. The only problem I had was that the CD Size limits are a bit inflexable when it comes to fitting either 1 film or 2 films on a DVD. 6X740 Mb was too big for 1 movie and 2 lots of 3x740 Mb won't fit on a DVD-R (Maybe I was just unlucky?) Anyway so I did a little hack of my own and replaced the cd sizes of 740,800 to 50 and 100. This way I can set the overall file size to 21x100 Mb or 84x50Mb (about 4.3 Gb).
I am sure it wouldn't take much to add a cd size of 100mb to this fantastic program (creep, creep). Maybe even an option to burn the dvd automatically, although I am not sure that DVD2SVCD was designed for DVD-R.

You don't need a hack or anything. Just type in the CD-size you want to have instead of using the pulldown menu.

Yes that would work for some DVD players, but they wouldn't be DVD's they would be SVCD's on DVD media. There are only a few DVD players that will play them at this point, but the numbers are growing.
What I thought the original intent of the suggestion was to strip a DVD down to one Audio stream, no extra's, etc.. to make it fit onto one blank DVD. Since DVD2SVCD doesn't edit the IFO, does convert the audio and does not make the file structure anything like a DVD this would not be possible with a simple hack. Almost the whole program would need to be changed. If I was mistaken on the intent of the original post then this does not apply.

@markrb:
I think the way rocket_robot described would give a compliant DVD, but only for PAL I think.
Because no mp2-audio is accepted for NTSC-DVDs.
All his Files are compliant for DVD-Production. MPEG2-Video with resolution 720x576 and and 48 kHz mp2-Audio are posssible for DVD-Standard. although this works only for PAL-Movies.

Hi,
I tried and edited the script....
Indeed looks very good in combination
with Spruceup.
I made a DVDR with two movies on it.
(bitrate tab: 1 CD 2100MB)
The only problem was the aspect ratio. It's standard (4:3) in Spruce.
So I hacked DVD2SVD to replace the resize from 480 to 720 (hexedit), I left the "72" borders intact to get ratio okay. (?)
Waiting for the result now ....
The only problem I see now is that my
subtitles are not centered, to much to the left (probably because of the 480 > 720 hack). Anybody ?
