View Full Version : Is there any way to reduce compression artifacts ...

By compression artifacts I mean the way a large uniformly coloured area (or one with a slight gradation) such as a wall or patch of sky, will show blocks and blotches in certain conditions. I've seen this even on some DVDs - Jumanji is a classic case, where only 32 MB of VOBs were allocated on average to each minute of the film (every other DVD of some 30 I've examined had at least 40 MB/min and some as much as 60 MB/min)
This is quite different from the macroblocks which occur in fast action scenes if an insufficient bitrate has been allocated.

Uh . . temporal smoother helps in elminiating blocks in solid color areas. There's also Smart Smoother HQ, but that's for noise removal. http://sauron.mordor.net/dgraft/hiq/smoothhiq.html Best I can do.

Thanks for the ref. That SSHQ looks interesting.
All these smoothers reduce detail - some less than others no doubt. Guess what I am really hoping for is a smarter codec ...
cheers

Yes, perhaps you should try another codec... ;)

Postprocessing is the cheap way out. It can be quite effective on the problems you mentioned. Then again, Xvid doesn't have those problems.
(postprocessing is in the divx filter options, "quality setting" i think it's called.)

Xvid doesn't have those probs? Tell me more. Which is the best Xvid resource site?
How different is it using Xvid to rip DVDs rather than NanDub?
What codec is required (the Xvid codec I guess :) )and is this likely to clash with DivX3.11a/4.12?
thanx

Xvid or the new DivXs don't have the problem on uniform areas with blockiness. Then again they're a slight bit blurrier than SBC. The best site for Xvid usage is right here :D. Go read the guide and then the FAQ in the Xvid forum. No it won't conflict with divx.
More on how SBC, Xvid and Divx4 compare to each other here (http://www.doom9.org/codecs.htm). Note that Divx5 is now out and Xvid is being developped very fast, so it's a bit outdated.
