If I want a dvd-conversion with selectable subtitles which can be turned on and off in softwares like PowerDVD or WinDVD, how many choice do I have? (svcd, divx, minidvd, or others would be ok.)
Thx.

You can use SVCD and DivX with subtitles as far as I know. Its very complicated to have switchable subs, and you shouldn't embark on this journey unless you REALLY REALLY want them, and even then they may not work(SVCD's that is)
For DivX,
Get vobsub.exe and install it totally.
Have VOBSUBConfigure make the .sub, and .idx
Rename them to the exact file name of the DivX file you made.
Then have them in the same folder, and right click ont he picutre useing windows media player 6.x(Only in 6.x, don't know why any other sould would use any player other than that...but..it won't work), nd go to languages and you will see your subtitles overlay options right there.
For SVCD, do the same, then use submux.exe(use the GUI) to mux the .sub into the mpg file, this creates what is called CVD subtitles, and then they MAY work in your DVD player. I have a brand new one and it doens't work, they are off center. Go to www.vcdhelp.com to see if your EXACT DVD player can do this, there is a section where people can send in that they have the DVD player and they have tested it with certain types of.....alternative DVD media (SVCD X(S)VCD XVCD, VCD, etc...)
Or you can save to bmps using subripper, and use mux an OGT text based file into I-Author and created what are called SVCD subtitles, they sometimes work too..basically, subtitles in SVCD's may not work. I know also that you can "mux" an ssa or a .sub file into a DivX using Ogg/Vorbis streams I think...that would be cool look into that also
