hi...
I've just encoded "Les Rivières Pourpres" and wondered if anyone else already has. I'm not really skilled in encoding so I'd like to see how others have encoded it - to see how i could improve the quality of the film.

First of all, there have been no major problems, I've encoded the film just as described in doom9's Divx 5 guide and it all worked fine.
I've gone for 1CD (705MB), 640x272, and a video bitrate of 829kBit/sec. The Audio is VBR@~128. The duration of the movie is 6090secs.

How can I improve the quality of the final encoded film?
As I said, I haven't encoded much yet, in fact it's the first film I've encoded with Divx Pro 5 and GKnot... And I'd like to learn... :)

advTHANKSance ;)

You can use a more efficient audio compression like ogg vorbis, which give very good result for bitrate < 100 kbps.

You can add a TemporalSmoother filter.

You could also encode credits with reduced quality (Bilinear Resize, Hight Constant quantizer). For Black & White credits, use a Level filter.

For a low bitrate, sometimes a lower resolution can result in a better looking divx. Try resolutions down to 512xXXX when you think your divx is not good enough.

Instead of the temporal smoother, I'd first try another resizing method (if you haven't already used soft bicubic or even bilinear resizing).

btw. what programs do you use for resizing? IMO avisynth (also used by Gknot) is the best choice for resizing and filtering.

i'm following the doom9 guide, so i'm using avisynth for resizing 8if i've not completely misunderstood the guide :)

actually, i've raised the bitrate to 1015, as i've extremely compressed the end credits (video data of the credits is 2,25megs) and due to 800mb cds i've selected in gordian knot... but i'll try lowering the resolution if i'm not pleased with the quality...

thanks for the tips so far...

i'm following the doom9 guide, so i'm using avisynth for resizing 8if i've not completely misunderstood the guideI haven't read the guides recently - it seems the doom9 guides are all based on Gknot/dvd2avi/avisynth now. In former times (LOL) there were guides on how to use FlaskMPEG and other tools, so I didn't know that "following the guides" now automatically stands for "using Gknot". I like it that way (Gknot is the best!)

So, I guess there's nothing else you can do to make a better rip :)
