View Full Version : Can q-pel cause problems?

I've kept it on for my encode and it seems ok (only done one movie so far though). But reading everwicked's guide he says to enable only bi-directional and gmc. I know that people have been experiancing problems with gmc, so wouldn't it make sense to enable q-pel instead of it?
Bottom line, have any of you guys experianced any problems with q-pel so far?
Thanks,

I have encoded 3 movies now with divx 5.0. The last one I did, I used qpel. I had terrible artifacts, it also slowed my encoding down a lot. I use gmc and b frames and have great results.

what kind of artifacts are you getting? Maybe it only works using low bitrate/res...

It was weird, I was getting artifacts on peoples faces really bad. It also had trails during action scenes. The bitrate I used was 800 and the res was 640xXXX I forgot the exact res and its encoding right now with qpel off. The two other vidoes I did without qpel and gmc and b frames on look great.

that's strange, I haven't watch the DivX 5 encoded movies yet so I havent been able to look for artifacts properly. I might do an encode without qpel and see what it's like. As for GMC, after people started reporting the squares in the video because of it I decided to leave it off.
