Ok, let's stop all the bitchin and moaning about DivX Pro-Ad/Spyware and solve the problem. As you can tell from my other posts, I'm not too pleased about DARC implementing a spyware download, however I do support a paid version. All I want is to be able to evaluate it first without compromising my computer (and don't give me any crap about GAIN not being Spyware because it is!).
I would be interested in hearing from all of you so that we can send a message to DARC, so here are my suggestions.
1. Dump the Ad version and send it to Spyware Hell.
2. Implement a normal trialware version that either limits itself to a fixed number of encodes or a time period. This is quite typical for most trial software.
3. Implement license registration the same way others do. Use PayPal and send a registration key. If you don't like that, create two versions and send the register version after PayPal accepts payment.
To DARC - if you're afraid that a trialware version license will be cracked, you're right, it will. There is very little software available on the web that is not cracked. It's a fact of web software business and you have to treat it the same way shopkeepers treat shoplifting. But I think that there are more honest people than dishonest and you will make up the revenues in pure volume.
Now, for all you whiners out there who want the world provided to you on a platter for free, you have a choice: be a crook and get a cracked version, or jump ship and go to XviD. If DARC sees a large migration to XviD, they may change their minds about their payment model.
I am also posting this on the DivX forum.
Let's give DARC some constructive feedback!
