My experiences with Divx5 Pro have so far been very positive.
1)It seems to produce the same or better quality at a lower bitrate. I shoot for 1000kps after audio is muxed. That usually means about 768-900k for video. When using the 1 pass quality based encoding I can bump the quality to at least 98% as opposed to 95% with divx 4.12. GMC and Bframes are the only options I use. They seem to be the ticket to the improved compression. Try the same clip with them on and off to see the difference. Qpel makes no visual/compression difference I can see so I leave it off.
2.) Noticebly faster on my athalon 1.4g. I used to get about 14fps. Now I am getting about 19.
3.) I hear some people are having problems with the divx5 playback but in my case it is much much much faster. I use zoomplayer for playback and it has dramaticly improved seek speed. The Divx5 alpha player is even better. I can drag the position slider and get almost instant feedback.
Negatives to Divx5.
1.)It replaced my Divx 4.12 without asking.
2.)Gknot doesn't fully support it yet.
3.)The Gator ads are somewhat alarming. Altho I think the free/pay/ads policy is more than fair I do NOT trust the Gator folks. They seem to be untrustworthy in my experience.
my 2cents. It might be worth at least half that!
