View Full Version : One extra bin/cue file (small)
mkanel
5th March 2002, 06:26
I've been getting one extra bin/cue file. When I want one I get two, when I want three I get four, etc. The last bin is always small 2-10 Mbs. The previous ones are always of perfect size 806 Mbs.
I suspect the problem lies with my input files, I'm asking DVD2SVCD to do something it wasn't exactly designed for. I converting Mpeg2 files captured with Dazzle DVCII.
I have a weak theory that goes like this. DVD2SVD determines the length of my video file by some means. The program(s) assume(s) a frame rate of 29.97 fps, unfortunately Dazzle captures at 30 fps, so when all the processing is done there are 1.001 more frames than expected (30/29.97) so the video file is .1% larger than expected and the extra data is to big to fit on the requested number of CD's.
I have two work around solutions 1)ignore the last bin, it's less than one minute of video, or 2)select an initial CD size of 790 and select "Don't make images" on the CD image page. Run the conversion then edit the project file "dvd2svcd project file.d2s" changing the CD size entry back to standard for an 80 minute CD "bbMPEGCDSize=795" then select images to be made on the CD image page, and lastly run crash recovery starting with SVCD authoring.
Anyone have another theory, or better yet a way to make this work without all the messing around?
Thanks.

One other thing to try.
Find the correct length of the video, then in the bitrate tab enter that length on the size and number of cd's you want, this will show you the bitrate it is calculating, then in the MAX AVG section on the bitrate tab put in a number about 50 points lower then what the bitrate tab said it should be. This will force DVD2SVCD not to use any rate higher then what is in the the MAX AVG for the AVG rate in CCE. This should in the end reduce the file size.
Return the time figures back to the way they were just in case the video is a minute shorter or longer then you think.

Or you could also download the latest version which should have that bug fixed in it here is the link http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15623

Thanks Markrb and Chainsaw135.
Markrb, I like your method better than mine, it's more exact and less messy.
Chainsaw135, I've taken your advice too. It seems like build 4 of 1.0.7 works most of the time. I've only had it fail once and then just barely, my extra bin had an mpeg of only 541Kb, so I lost practically nothing, most of my conversions with build 4 have produced the proper number of bins.
Thanks for your time. Mike.

I'd be interested in log file or dvd2svcd.ini file of the movie you did that failed or had an extra bin size. If you don't have that information right now...can you post it next time you have that problem? Maybe we can figure this out for you or if its some kind of bug ect it can be fixed:)...keep us posted.

Chainsaw135,
I'm happpy to post it, here's the log text of the conversion with the extra bin, next I'll post the log text of the identical conversion with cd images turned off. I'm not sure if this merits a "fix" because I suspect that the problem is my source files. If you would like more info please let me know, I'll hold off on the ini and d2s files unless requested. Thanks again for the help. Mike.

Chainsaw135,
I just realized that I failed to explain why the second conversion worked with the proper two bin files. If you look you'll see that in the second post made with CD images selected off the cut point is set 1MB larger than the other conversion 796MB vs 795MB, I didn't do that manually, it happens when I select don't make images, and in my case is just enough to allow the proper number of bins. Mike.

@Markrb Yeah that is true:( dang i get that way to much information this is not the only forum i go to, and not the only subject i talk about so i guess sometimes i do over look small things that can be important factors:)

@mkanel Not sure if you have tried this possible solution...
Go under then bbmpeg tab and make sure "cd overlap" has a check mark in the box if it dosent put one in it, then re do your muxing and cuting ect...

Chainsaw135,
I haven't played with overlap but I'll try it. I'm not sure I know what it does. I assume if I select a 5 second overlap then I'll see 5 seconds from the previous disk on the next disk. If that's right wouldn't that raise the total number of bits to be burned and make an extra bin file more likely? Or maybe DVD2SVCD will take the overlap into account when computing the bit rate and lower it every so slightly.
If you don't know instantly don't bother to research it, I'll just try and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.
P.S. I hadn't taken note of the overlap feature but now that you mention it I think I might like it regardless of whether it helps my extra bin issue.

these two posts were in the wrong thread...stupid = me
1st post)
this is the same problem I'm experiencing. My theory is that I don't use cd overlap. Can someone please try it with 1.0.7 build 4 and have cd overlap unchecked and see if you don't get a tiny third .cue .bin file image?
My bbmpeg ini says cut put is at 795MB. I put 800 in the cd size tab. Doesn't matter if it's a 2 cd then I get a tiny 3rd. Just did forest gump and it was 3 cds plus a teenie winy 4th image.
a tiny small additional third or fourth image will be created PROBLEM
2nd post)
ok I've isolated it....it is 100% the cd overlap. I've checked CD OVERLAP (which I haven't been doing forever) and this third image won't occur and since 1.0.6 build 4 up to 1.0.7 build 4 this problem occurs.
bottom line is:
-- If you have cd overlap unchecked you WILL 99% of the time have an additional .cue .bin anywhere from 2MB - 8MB in size.
--If you have it checked then you will not encounter this problem.

mrbass,
I did another conversion identical to the one that gave me an extra (third) bin/cue file except that this time I used CD overlap (one second only). My results were the same as yours, the proper number of bin/cue files were created (two), but I don't know how to interpret the results.
First I need to state that my findings might not apply to others because I'm doing something that DVD2SVCD isn't specifically designed to do, I'm converting mpeg2's of non-standard NTSC framerate (30fps Vs 29.97 fps) Mrbass are you doing anything similar to me? I assume you're just doing real DVD conversions.
Also I've been more fortunate than you with my SVCD creation since the release of 1.0.7 build 4. In my limited sample of about 5 conversions only one has produced an extra bin/cue file, and the amount of data on the third mpeg (only visible if you select don't delete any files on the misc tab) was small, 541 Kb which is only a few seconds of video even at low bitrates.
As I said selecting cd overlap did give me the correct number of bin/cue files. In both conversions I used a CD size of 800, this caused a cut point of 795 to be used in both conversions. The bit rate change slightly from the no-overlap to overlap conversion. My video is almost exactly one hour long, 3599.77 seconds or 3600.77 seconds with the one second overlap. That change of one second caused the bitrate to fall from the no-overlap conversion to the overlap conversion by one from 3407 to 3406. The encoded audio is identical in both 98,373 Kb.
Since I've had mostly good luck on the number of bin/cue files created I'm tempted to say that I just got lucky and that somewhere in the adjustments to bit rates and file sizes I ended up with the right number of bins. I do see one odd thing, it's probably perfectly normal but I really don't understand the details of what goes into SVCDs, it's magic to me. Looking at the muxed files in the no-overlap conversion I see this
bbmpeg_muxed_file00.mpg 813,627 KB
bbmpeg_muxed_file01.mpg 813,521 KB
bbmpeg_muxed_file02.mpg 541 KB
and in the overlap conversion
bbmpeg_muxed_file00.mpg 813,682 KB
bbmpeg_muxed_file01.mpg 814,451 KB
If you add the file sizes of file 2 (01) and file 3 (02) in the first conversion they're still smaller than file 2 (01) of conversion 2. So why couldn't it just have built two bin's instead of three?
I guess this is all idle speculation at this point since in my own selfish view of things I have a solution that works pretty well for me, I'm just happy that the program is flexible enough to work with my files. It sounds like you're in about the same situation mrbass in that you've found what works for you. I'll probably keep doing my conversions without overlap and if I do experience another case of extra bins I'll try again with overlap and let you know what I find.
If anybody is having similar problems or wants more specific information from me please let me know, and thanks for all the help and education chainsaw 135, mrbass, and markrb.

Thanks for the data..that does help out i think in showing that with the cd overlap selected the mux/cut seems to be getting done properly but when its not checked even if like in your case, the file size is smaller you still get a 3rd bin file...I would think that information plus Mrbass and his findings will help fix the issue:)

chainsaw135, or anybody with a similiar problem.
That was a quick response, thanks. I'm reluctant to call for a fix to anything based on my results because once again, yeah, I keep saying it, but my stuff's not standard, maybe it matters, maybe it doesn't I just don't know. I assume mrbass is doing standard conversions but if anyone else is seeing this you could help him out by just adding a short post saying that your getting an extra bin/cue file. If others are seeing it then I assume the smart guys will fix it or figure out what we're doing wrong. Thanks smart guys.

I thought I was done with this issue but I decided to run one more test. (I know, get a life mkanel)
I did a crash recovery from the muxing and cutting stage on a previous conversion that had given me an extra bin/cue file, the first run had overlap deselected and gave me three bin cue files. The muxed files looked like this.
bbmpeg_muxed_file00.mpg 813,627 KB
bbmpeg_muxed_file01.mpg 813,521 KB
bbmpeg_muxed_file02.mpg 541 KB
After the crash recovery I had these two files.
bbmpeg_muxed_file00.mpg 813,627 KB
bbmpeg_muxed_file01.mpg 814,585 KB
With overlap selected I got the proper number of bin/cue files even though I had one more second of video/audio, and since overlap wasn't selected until the crash recovery stage the program, DVD2SVCD, never had the chance to adjust the video bit rate to compensate for the extra video.
You should have some healthy skepticism toward my results because I'm using captured mpeg2 files vs DVDs, but I don't think that's what caused this. If you're trying to pinpoint this error you can run my test in reverse, then deselect overlap for crash recovery and see if you get an extra bin, I did.
I never would have suspected overlap as the cause of the extra bin, so once again thanks mrbass and chainsaw 135. I would recommend that anyone who is getting an extra bin (as of 1.0.7 build 4) try selecting overlap in the bbmpeg tab.

I know the original post was a long time ago but I have now encountered a similar problem with DVD back-up: Independence Day Region 1, director's version PGC (the longer one). I expected 3 discs with the usual 1 pass VBR uncertainty for the last disc file size. What I got was a slightly shortened 3rd disc and a tiny 4th disc
I'm not able to post the log because I am at work but: DVD2SVCD 1.09b1, vStrip, CD size set at 790, 1Pass VBR, min bitrate checked to reflect anticipated average bitrate to put a 154 mn DVD on three discs, VCDXBuild, no subs, cd overlap 6 seconds. A couple of other things I did that may have had some effect:
1) edit the AVS script to crop the 2.35:1 borders (Crop 0,58,720,368) on the 16:9 DVD and add extra border later (AddBorder 0,116,0,116).
2) use the THX Dolby 17 sec MPEG that I had converted earlier as the Title Pic.
3) Set the Aspect ratio to 16:9 (not anamor on the conversion tab. DVD2SVCD was picking it up as 4:3
BBMpeg muxed file sizes in MB: (approx. 790, 790, 700, 2)
BIN files are similar.
This is more of FYI posting and to see if others have had a similar experience. :)
I am going to use crash recovery from the Muxing stage without changing any settings first. The problem is not at the SVCD aauthoring stage since BBMpeg made the cuts.

I've had the same thing happen to me twice recently and the only thing in common with both rips was that I used the imdb information option with the cover pic as my title.
The last dvd was only 104 minutes long yet I ended up with a third disc 1,689k bin file.
I like the movie info but I can really do without the title pic if I have to if thats where the problem lies.
Thanks,
