It seems that the first impressions of DivX 5 are rather disappointing. I've only had time to do a short test, but it seems that the quality hasn't improved much over DivX 4.12.

The encoding speed is a bit quicker and the file size smaller (which means better quality too), but I was expecting a bit more with all the hype.

It was good of them to include cropping/resizing tools built in, but I think i'll stick to Gknot for that anyway.

I'll keep using DivX 4.12 for now, until gknot supports 5 properly. I know there are work arounds, but I leave my pc on overnight encoding and it's a hassle to only have one-pass per movie done when I wake up. Anyone else doing the same?

Aggreed, allthough I wasn't expecting much.

I don't care one bit for speed, I would gladly let my PC work 5 times longer for a true 5% quality improvement.
As for quality improvements I have yet to see any proof (am testing as I write this)

This absolute crap, it's blotware like this that will eventually destroy an otherwise perfectly good product. DXN should stick to developing better encoders instead of wasting time on inbuilt chop, resize and ivtc options. There are perfectly good freeware solutions for these things.

Sorry if this turned into a rant.

Interesting point, BluDChyLD!

I'm still using the "old" method, using divx 4.11 codec. I encode at night, leave my computer running and when I wake up, I have a new encoded divx movie.

With this "new" method of using the divx 5 codec, are you saying we cannot do this encoding process? i.e. it wont automatically do both passes while we leave it on at night unsupervised? If so, that kinda sux for us overnight encoders. Please let me know your thoughts on this issue?

you can automatically do both passes overnight. just use vdub's joblist feature.
see doom9's divx5 guide (http://www.doom9.org/divx5.htm) for further details :D

What's the old method? Although I know a fair bit about DivX encoding I haven't been into very long and started with 4.12. As far as I know, if you want to use gknot with DivX 5 you cannot use the encoding function in it. You have to manually do this through vdub.

Where as gknot automates each pass, when you use vdub you have to use the codecs properties to select which pass you're doing. So if I was encoding overnight, i'd only have a first-pass process finished when I wake unless i got up sometime I changed the settings to do a second pass too.

I don't feel like the slight quality improvment of DivX 5 is worth this hassle. But I'll glady use it when gknot implements it properly :)

Hi,

To repeat an earlier statement, use the joblist in Vdub to do both passes overnight.

Then all you gotta do is mux the audio....personally, I started Gknot doing the audio-only part, then I started Vdub with both passes in the queue and let it go. Now all I have to do is mux the audio in nandub and voila! c'est finis!

Hi, Old method meaning using the 4.11 divx codec with the gknot .21, & .23 update. The newer methods I am refering to are using the Xvid or the divx 5.

From what I'm reading though, people are saying we can do both passes if we "use the joblist in Vdub"? I'll have to read up on that.

I'll prolly just wait and see if people really think divx 5 is worth it in terms of quality for me to make the switch from the 4.11 codec. From what I'm doing now using the 4.11 with gknot, quality is pretty much near dvd quality when I use 2 cd's. And it's no hassle whatsoever to just encode at night while I sleep, wake up to a freshly made divx movie :)

not much to "read up on".

the job list feature is explained in doom9's guide - hope
you read it, but if not:

1) when you go to save your (first pass) .avi file in vDub,
check the box at the bottom that lets you defer processing.

2) when you go to save your (second pass) .avi file in vDub,
check the box at the bottom that lets you defer processing.

3) press F4 (or bring up the job control dialog from the File
menu) and press the Start button

that's all there is to it, now you can go to sleep!

Awesome, thanks for the tip :) I suppose we can do the same using the Xvid codec? Maybe I'll give it a try and see how it goes.
