Whilt happily surfing around the 'net, I came upon a post on a non-DivX forum saying that Gordian Knot was for newbies....

To say I was surprised by this is an absolute understatement, and to compound my shock he began praising XMpeg. Now, it's been a while since I last used XMpeg, but when I did use it, between crashes, it failed to impress with it's unflexible encoding, no filters, no deinterlacing (I think) and just a general lack of the lovely goodies that Gordian Knot provides. In my mind XMpeg is the package for 'newbies' as it hides all the complexities of DivX - Gordian Knot give FULL control over 3.11 SBC options and more.

Basically, I just want people to say that I'm right.

Right?

Gordian Knot can be used by newbies, but it is the most perfect encoding tool for pros as well. Even if you want to tweak Nandub settings manually you can first use Gordian Knot to make it all easier and faster.
Gordian Knot is a very professional tool that is also suitable for newbies. Good combination, I love it!

There are two schools of thought on this subject.

The first says you are right.

The second says you are damned right. (I'm in this one)

I found that Gknot was easy for a new-B to get started with, but what is very interesting is that as my encoding skills have developed with each new movie (I've done around forty so far), Gknot has always been right there with me, if not a few steps ahead.
