Alright, the whole reason I got into VCD/SVCD was to transfer my Star Wars LDs...and I am on the verge of having what I want-a good quality version of Star Wars (with Greedo NOT shooting first) to play on my DVD player...this is a clip that best represents the problem that I am having...if you'll notice (ESPECIALLY in the the scene with Vader and Tarkin) there are some weird diagonal lines on the picture.

Now I know what you are gonna say...that it is the interlacing affect on my computer monitor...well, when I put it on the TV it does the same thing...and I tried deinterlacing it and taking it to VCD...same thing...

My setup:

From the S-Vid of my Sony LD Player to the S-Vid of my PCTV
Captured at 640x480 using VDub and Huffy...
Frameserved with vdub (Levels(black+5), 2D cleaner (r=1, sp=9) interlaced checked, smoother = 2 with noise prefilter, and resized to 480x480 bilinearly)
to CCE 2.5 and encoded at a CBR of 2500
muxed with sound from toolame via bbmpeg

whew!

Now all that I ask is that some of you video wizards burn this little puppy and look at it to see what I am doing wrong...or if you are really smart and can spot a hole in my process, please let me know so I can finally finish these films! Thanks in advance!

I can't see your clip yet (probably needs to be authorized by a mod), but from what you dispribe, it sounds like it could be a field-swap problem. Many video capture cards swap the fields on capture. I'm not sure if PCTV is one of them.

What this means is that the field lines that should be starting on the very first line are starting on the second, and the lines that should be starting on the second line are starting on the first (they are above the lines that they should be below). On diagonals in the video, this appears as a stair-step effect (if you think about it, I'm sure you'll be able to picture what is happening).

You say you used Huffy for the capture, which is good (if you still have the capture). Just go into the config for Huffy and tell it to swap field lines. You will need to re-encode.

PS. I believe there is some information on swapped fields on Luke's Video Guide (http://www.geocities.com/lukesvideo/) if you're interested. I think it's one of the best sites on the web for information on captures.

No you can't see the clip because I am an idiot. Here is where it is.

Sorry. Now I tried the swap field filter on Vdub. Is that the same as changing it in Huffy,s setup? Thanks for the help, man.

ok, that was the wrong clip....dammit! ok now it is a 10 sec clip (~4 mb)...is the field order messed up? It looks good except for those blasted lines!
