Hello everybody !

Since a week or so I am experiencing problems navigating doom9.org with Netscape (i.e. german version 4.7). On the main page, the left frame only shows the message:
"The parameter is incorrect".

Everything works fine with IE, so it seems.

Is there a way you guys can fix this ? I hate using IE !

Greetings,
Thomas

I also have the Problem with this left frame ( No new, old nes, guides ...) with Opera 6 (build 1010) and Netscape 6.2.1
With IE all works fine, but i prefer the others, would be nice ;)

Hi,

I have the same problem in linux using netscape...I dont know what version since the only time I use linux is in my computing class...its just annoying when i decide to go to doom9.net and the left menu doesnt work. I get the same error "The parameter is incorrect", i remember hearing that it has something to do with the new counter...

if you use crapscape 4.7x disable javascript.. however that will also screw the upcoming easier navigation.

or use a better browser: IE, Netscape 6.x or Opera 6.x.. I've tested all of them and they work just fine whereas Netscape 4.x crashes a lot and can't even properly render my page in the first place.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I guess that even Netscape 4.x fulfills all the standards that exist for correct HTML and stuff.

It seems like more and more sites don't go with the standards and code pages that can only be viewed correctly with certain browsers (ususally IE). Why are there trials vs. MS for unlawfully pushing their browser into the market when at the same time website programmers everywhere volunteer in assisting MS in spreading their browser ?

In other words: If I can't use your pages with Netscape, is it Netscape's fault or yours ?
I don't mean to offend you. Besides the problems described above I just love your site which has been very helpful ever since I startet DVD conversions.

Greetings,
Thomas

actually.. netscape 4 does not fullfill many W3C standards, starting with style sheets. CSS-1 is very poorly supported in Netscape 4 and you don't even want to get me started about CSS-2. Compare how my site looks in Netscape 6 and Netscape 4 and you see what I'm talking about. And I'm using a very restricted set of CSS commands, really nothing out of the ordinary. Or.. how about you point your browser to www.theregister.co.uk? Don't know if it still applies but for a long time that page was inbrowsable using Netscape 4 (so since we only have Netscape 4 on Solaris in school I couldn't access that page at all until I found out about alternative browsers that work under Solaris).

What 99.99999% of you don't know is that I used to use Netscape 4 even after IE5 came out. I was once too thinking that MS is evil and you shouldn't support them by using their browser. When I finally kicked that ideological crap overboard I found a browser that was faster and much more stable and I've been happy with it ever since. I tried out Netscape 6 when it first came out but it was so buggy that I abandoned it. Apparently that's now better but that ship has sailed. And, I worked in a Solaris environment during my whole summer holidays and they only had netscape 4 (until I found ie for solaris ;).. I had crashes on a daily basis. The same applies when I surf the net in school on solaris stations.. crash after crash. I hate crashes and I hate buggy software.

Now, if you want to be ideological consider this: AOL bought Netscape. Do you honestly think that AOL is the lest bit better than Microsoft? Think again. AOL, Sun, Oracle, etc.. they are in no way any better than Microsoft. So, instead of bitching about IE you should dump Netscape as well and use Opera. It's free, it's fast, it's slim and it supports most W3C standard (at least a shitload better than Netscape 4). Plus.. I test my page using Opera6 as well.. just in case.

That being said I hope we can end this now. I think I've made it clear enough that I hate Netscape 4 because it mutilates my page layout (not because I use non standard html, but because the program cannot handle W3C specs) and it crashes a lot so I don't care if sitemeter screws it up or not. It is very much the same as with operating systems.. it's your own fault if you use a buggy OS like w9x and crash twice a day or if you use something more stable and only have a crash every couple of months.

Last but not least.. isn't it funny that sitemeter uses javascript, a language which Netscape defined, but which Netscape4 cannot handle? I find it hilarious. Especially since Netscape's 2 major contestants have no problem with it, and Netscape 6 (which generally supports web standards a lot better than it's predecessors) can handle it without any problems as well.

..well put doom9. I agree with that, i used to use netscape all the time, then i tried ie...and found it heaps better...and when i reinstall windows its already there :)

@doom9: Seems like my assumptions about Netscape and standards were wrong. I prematurely put you in the row of "IE optimzied only"-website programmers. Sorry !

About browsers: I was thinking about switching to Netscape 6, but when I was browsing some NGs about this topic, most people wrote about problems and that NS6 is still somewhat in a beta-stage. What do you guys think ?

me and my flatmate both installed Netscape 6.21 recently for some project we had to do... at first glance I'd say it works reasonably well and has matured quite a lot since the 6.0x releases, both speedwise and in terms of stability but I'm not using it as much to be the judge whether you should ugprade. I suggest you try both browsers side by side.

But there's definitely a point here.. the gecko engine on which netscape (and mozilla) are based hasn't reached 1.0 status yet. But AOL is considering putting Gecko in their next software release which should come out later this year and one would assume that they'll only do it if gecko is really stable..
