View Full Version : Creating 350MB files in GK instead of CD size? How?
I have a bunch of 30 minutes episodes I have ripped, which I want to put 2 split episodes onto CD of approx 350MB each in size.
Going through the normal DVD2AVI process in GK, I dont seem able to do this;(
Whats the best way forward? The files themselves are .M2V and .Ac3 (or wav)
Cheers

In the Total Size box, there are two boxes under "Total File Size". Change the MB one to 350.

Hi :),
Ok - first if u wanna change the filesize just change the "total file size" number - or - change to "calculate avi file size" mode and adjust the "average bitrate" until u get the filesize u want ( all on the bitrate tab in gk ) - bit of a no-brainer :)
also - id consider encoding all the episodes u want on one cd together. My reasoning is that SBC encoding takes bits away from low motion scenes to make high motion scenes look better - so if u have 2 episodes and one has a lot of high motion scenes in it doing that way will mean that episode has a higher amount of bits and .: quality - something to consider.
Weird!!
I did try to amend the file size before I sent the question in! ANd it wouldn't let me!
So with the answers above, I retried. Still wouldn't let me.
With the curser still in the box, I had pressed a key number - and that appeared. It would seem that you cannot just delete the number and start over, you have to have at least 2 numbers in the box. Hence the problems I had in changing it. (I had highlighted the 700MB figure and tried overtyping).
So just type in the new number one figure at a time, and delete the original figures 1 at a time, and it can be amended as you said.
Cheers again

it actually happens becos gknot is calculating as u type and u cant enter numbers that are out of range. i usually just highlight the number i want to change and replace that until i got what i need.

Actually you can type in 350MB into Gordian Knot (in)directly.. The only thing you need to do is make sure your number stays within GK's numerical range. If there's a 700 there, just type 35 at the beginning, then delete the 70. Ta-da, you have 350! It works properly too, I've been re-encoding all my SVCD TV episodes this way..

This is what I do, when I encode Episodes:
Say I want to put 6 Episodes on one 700MB CD. I rip each of them seperatly with Smartripper. Then I open the VOBs from the first Episode in DVD2AVI and instead of pressing OK I press ADD again and choose the next VOBS fo the second Episode and so on. Then I save that Project and have a .d2v File with one CD Length to feature the codec a bit more.
Then if I use the usual way in GK I get a whole length audio file, so i have no synch issues and I simply encode it in only the first pass.
To get the starting frames of each new Episode: Make a new text file called keyframes.txt with your editor and open each of the Info files created by Smartripper and copy the framelength in the calculator to get each of the framenumber and add the next and so on. Now I have a text file with six keyframenumbers. Then I open the First-Pass Log file in Wordpad and search for Frame [framenumber from keyframes.txt] for example Frame 32812. Then I change the 0 in intra 0 to intra 1. This will make a Keyframe at that position to cut it later on. I go to Encoder Tab of GK and select add Job. there I choose Second Pass and hit the encode button.
Well the rest should be clear... Mux audio and video. Take the Keyframes from keyframes.txt and enter them in Virtual Dub to cut at the right positions.
Hope that helps. Didn't intend to make it that long;)
Thanks for that.
Ive finished the project I was doing, but will have a go at this method on the next one of this type I do - which no doubt wont be too long!
Cheers
