I've been trying different scenarios and obviously getting different results.

What I want to know is, am I right in thinking that dropping from a higher amount of passes ex:. 3-4 to a lower amount ex: 1-2 will create larger image files? I would have thought that the file sizes would have increased with the amount of passes. But when I decrease the number of passes, I seem to be getting larger bin files..

Any thoughts?

Yes the amount of passes will affect you're file size. It's basically because the more passes the program performs the better it allocates the bitrate. Also I normaly do 4-5 passes depending just because i like smaller file size and quality.

Do you think I can get away with 4-5 passes with a 224 audio on 2 cds?
I dropped it to 128 but it's getting a little swishy on soundtrack tunes. (no big deal but i'm kind of a perfectionist)

Also, does the cd overlap work for you? (just curious as I have yet to benefit from that setting)

What is the length of the movie? I also normally just do the 192 instead of 224 for audio

cd overlap i set to 5 seconds... seems to be enough to where you wont miss nothing when you change disks

Here is my settings for a good quality svcd

Audio tab: no Downsample, Stereo 192

FrameServer: Bicubic Resize b 0.00 c 0.50

Edit as part of video encoding: I like to look at my avisynth script to make sure its not corrupt.

Bitrate: cd size i set all to 800 because i use 80 minute cd's:)
sometimes i'll overburn also depending in that case i adjust when needed.
Max 2496, min 755, min avg unchecked, max avg 2230

Encoder: Cinema craft, multipass 4,5 depending, upper field checked, Progressive checked, zizag scan checked, anti noise checked and i have that set at 2.
Image quality I set at like 12

BBmpeg cd overlap checked and set to 5, everything else i leave default

cd image tab: I dont use cd change pics myself, also vcdxbuild is checked, dvd chapeters is also checked

dvd2avi tab: force film is set to on, as i only do NTSC films ect.

I will fit a 2 hour movie myself on 2 disks anything more then that i go with 3 disks..tho if i get a longer movie that is 2 hours i will need to adjust some of the settings above. I've found that most the movies i've done so far have been 1 hour 30 minutes or an hour and 45minutes so those settings above have been sweet for me. Like mark posted below he uses 224 when going to 3 disks i as well use 224 when going to the 3 disks because you have that extra room might as well:) Thats why i posted up top "i normally use 192" but have been known to use 224:) ....

I do 100-105 minute movies on 2 cd's with 192 audio no problem as long as I use 90 minute cd's and a cd size point of 899, this will make a 905-906mb image. This is the largest my DVD player will play with 90 minute discs although I can burn more.
I am more concerned with quality then size and I always keep the avg bitrate at 2000 or above.
If the movie is longer I go to three cd's of 80 minute discs and if there is room I always go to 224 audio.
I always have my overlap set to 8 seconds.

As another opinion, I now put most all 2hr or even 2hr and 10 minute DVDs on two 800 CDRs now. This is an area that TMPG CQ seems to do a very good job for me, i.e., lower bitrate encodes. SO long as the CQ stays at 75 or greater. If it drops much below that I shift to 3 800 CDR.

I normally use 160-192 audio and these TMPG settings:

Thanx for the info guys I will try to mimic some of the settings.

@ chainsaw: you don't use the temporal smoother?
@ ddogg: Whenever I've tried tmpegenc I've gotten synch issues.
@ Markb: how much do your 90minute cds usually cost you?

Well after reading around here and doing tests I now wont use temporal smooth unless the bitrate is under 1,600. The fact is i never have bitrates that low so i dont use it:)

They tend to run around .70 cents each. Quite a bit more then I pay for 80 minute cd's. I just found a new place for 99 minute cd's that I haven't tried yet. They were $60 + $8 shipping to my house. I found them on pricewatch doing a search for 870mb. The address for the special price was http://www.blank-cd-cdr.com/product_pw/9099minutes.html
If the others tests are right I should be able to get another 40mb or so per disc on the 99 minute cdr discs and still play it on my DVD palyer.
Check out my thread in the advanced forum about my testing of 90 minute discs http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17070
If you are lucky you can find the CompuUSA branded 99 minute discs 16 pack for $10 at your local store. All the stores around me say they have them in their computer system, but they are nowhere to be found.

Word of caution: Your burner must support the larger discs. Check the link in the Q + A about 99 minute discs. There is a nice chart at that site about many burners and what they support. I have a rebagged Lite-ON, one of the best burners, and it supports the whole size of the discs.
