Of the many many file recovery programs out there, 99% of them most definately cannot recover a file that you accidentally overwrote. They only work for deleted files. I found this out after I accidentally overwrote a video I was meaning to encode. I know the video is still on that HDD somewhere, it was 800mb and I only overwrote 20mb. In a last ditch effort I tried to use Encase again, a program which I gave up on the last time this happened. I figure if it's good enough for the FBI, it's good enough for me. Too bad it's not an easy program to use. I can't find the right 700mb+ chunk, and even if I did I wouldn't have a clue as to how to rebuild the file header which was probably overwritten. I think it's lost in the mix somewhere, disassociated with anything like date or filename to make it easy.

I know I can't be the first one to accidentally overwrite a large file with a very small one and being very frusterated knowing that it's still there but not knowing what to do about it. So how do I recover overwritten files?
