I am trying to encode The Hunt For Red October. When I preview the vob's in DVD2AVI, the video type starts out at FILM 60-something and climbs to around FILM 90-something. It will then switch to NTSC for a while, then switch back to FILM 60-something. It will get close to the FILM 95% mark, then switch, then switch back and start over at 60%. Also, the frame type very quickly (multiple changes per second) between progressive and interlaced. The framerate stays at 29.970. Even during the middle of the preview, this is still happening. Should I use forced film or what, and would I have to deinterlace or do ITVC? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ivtc.. you're best off manually editing the avs and using decomb or greedyhma

For preview, try setting the start of the movie somewhere in the middle with the [ button. Leaders can be differemt than the main content.
Also, don't confuse de-interlacing with inverse telecine. They're two different processes. If your movie shows PROGRESSIVE rather than INTERLACED in preview, don't de-interlace.
There are several ways to inverse telecine (IVTC). The easiest is Force FILM. It may or may not be the best way for your particular movie, but I've found that starting the preview past the leader provides me with more accurate results.

I agree. When you preview from the beginning and cut it off soon after, you may get a mistaken impression of the main movie. I'll usually just skip the preview as it's too slow and just make a Force Film .d2v. If the percentage turns out to be too low, I'll go back and make another one at 30fps and then IVTC with Decomb.
