In a movie I have, the sound is 4 seconds off sync, which is pretty annoying. Is there any way/program to fix this?

There probably is a way - but what kind of movie are you talking about? AVI, VCD, SVCD?

OK, I've read through the guide (http://www.doom9.org/virtualdub_procedures.htm) but I really don't understand it. Sometimes it seems like I must have the video and audio in separate files, is it so? They also say that if the audio is to the "left", you insert a "-" but then the program complains.
I really have tried to understand it, but I don't... help!
