There's a compression format out called 7zip, I did some testing, and posted the results in the powerdivx forums (sorry can't seem to find it anymore, I 'll do some new ones later), it beat out all the other formats tested using a fair chunk of files from right here. at least with PDNG4a10 (DON'T ask for a copy from me), the original zip size from the website totals over a MB and the 7z compressed size came down to a little over 600KB. anyway the 7zip site has a windows binary, and source code, so it shouldn't be too hard to make a linux build

if you are talking about using alternative archiving program you should check out http://compression.ca
it's a bit out of date but gives good idea of how good some prgrms are.
while i have no issue with using any compression prgrm(thanx to windows commander:)), i can see alot of users begin to whine about some "unknown" file format and it will be more hassle teaching clueless how to use command line tools than sticking with zip/rar/ace.

I've been playing around with it some since last night.

The files that I compress are just treated as a normal ZIP file. So if you try WinZip or WinRar to extract it's no problem. That's the way it should work.
