View Full Version : AC3 audio causes odd video playback

This isn't your usual "I can't get AC3 to playback" question - I already got that working fine.
The problem is this: using GKnot, I can get some pretty excellent quality 2 disk rips. The image quality is sooo good. The problem is, when I mux in an AC3 track, the video playback is not totally smooth (while it is with MP3 tracks).
So, what I'm basically asking is: Is this a regualar problem, and that I put up with slightly less smooth motion for AC3 audio, or is there something else wrong?
I certainly got the kit to play this back: T-bird 1.4, 256MB, RAID hdd, etc.
Any suggestions??
Thanks

What is your interleaving settings? Most people seems to have success with 64/64 or 96/96. (preload/interleave [ms])

this kind of problem offen happens with AC3 streams... i usually fix it by playing with interleave settings:
i use 160/160 for 384 and 192 KBps and 120/120 for 448 KBps streams..
sometimes, i just can't get it to work ("charlie's angels" for example)
just play with the interleave setting till you get the best resolt..

if you have problem with smoothness in a divx+ac3 just use 64 or 96ms for interleave.

Cheers to all those that replied. I will play with the interleave settings then: my GKnot default appears to be 2 frame interval and 500ms preload.
BTW: Is there some kind of rule of thumb here, or just a "hack it 'til it works" type approach?
Thanks

Also,
Many thanks for not flaming me with, "you didn't bother to read: http://www.doom9.org/divx__ac3.htm"
Cheers.

very, very, VERY general rule:
the higher the bitrate, the lower the "interleave every.." setting sould be...
again: very general, it some time works the other way:
what i do, is start with 160ms for 192 or 384 and 120ms for 448, and then go 10 up, 20 down, 30 up, 40 down ie:
120, 130, 110, 140, 100, 150, 90
till i get it...
some times it's just trying different values till you get it..

Thanks again to all those that helped.
I have gone back to Nandub and tweaked the interleave to 500 preload and 64ms interleave (96 for one movie) and now all my movie rock!
Just a pain that GKnot doesn't quite get it right. Oh well.

some (most ?) soundblaster user wont get a smooth playback with any of these values. for some reason it must be a multiply of 32. the closer you get to these values (32,64,96,128...) the smoother the playback.
just give it a try. ;)
