I consider upgrading to Win XP (currently i'm using Win 2k). So when it comes to ripping encoding playback etc. which OS does a better job?

thx for any comment

XP +'s

1) its got pretty impressive AA on the desktop. rah, rah, rah.
2) sposedly it's pretty easy to spoof ppl with.
3) it boots a s***load faster than 2k.

XP -'s

1) i keep reading posts along the line of "my playback/encoding/mp3/ogg/synch/whatever doesnt workee in xp like it did in 2k" ..... that's really only because it's less mature than 2000 as an os.

2) ur getting more than an os - u get a nice bundle of mediocre m$ apps that u won't use because quite simply there is better products made by [ better ] companies ( firewall(? ;) ), compression apps, cd burning apps, "video editing" apps lol ..... ) xp = bloatware basically, aside from any qualms u may have about m$ removing a section of the market from other more deserving businesses.

3) it uses >1.2 gig ... :(

4) it has a "reassuring" desktop picture when you first boot it ( before you remove it that is :) )

5) it has the latest version of media player

I'm also starting to believe m$ is paying mags/websites off to not say a bad thing against xp - but then again, thats what i thought when every other m$ os 95 inclusive and onwards so i must be paranoid :p ... i bet u think i luv xp right :)

...however - just purely from an encoding pov, da franksta got it right :)

Maybe someone can post somethin +'ve bout xp ? :)

my view on WinXP as former W2K user: http://www.doom9.org/winxp.htm

The first thing I did was disable all the eye candy. It cetainly improves overall performance.

I'm a huge Win2K fan actually and the only reason I'm still using XP is simply because of the performance. Yes the boot speed is fast but because of the stabilty, I never have to reboot:)

Running XP on a dual CPU box seems to be slightly faster than Win2k. Some benchmarks on the web also show this. So other than speed I can't really say I like anything better than Win2K:)

if you have xp I strongly suggest the XP powertoys.. you can turn off all the new stuff concerning animations and other CPU eating stuff. The only thing remaining on my 2 PCs is the luna interface, I even canned the new start menu which I find so much worse than the old (of course... it may be easier for beginners but I've been using windows since v2.0)

XP will have a long term advantage in terms of support, including driver support. XP driver optimization is in full gear now and in many cases XP drivers now beat their W9x/ME counterparts.

Reasons why I really use XP instead of W2K (which I love.. remember all my W2K rules f*** W9x/ME bashing which is still ongoing though now XP has entered the class of good operating systems) is performance (startup time rules), driver support (creative and W2K = nightmare), multiuser capabilities (set up an account for my sis and my dad so they won't screw with my system) and the fast user switch is neat if I have to scare somebody away from my pc and do an admin task, built-in remote control is also pretty useful. and much more is written in the article I mentioned above

@Doom9
No actually I meant XP:) I'm still using it but it's only for performance reasons. I use TridiaVNC for my remote needs as I'm to scared to enable a remote software package from M$(security?).

XP PowerToys is pretty nice but somewhat limited. Check out Xteq Systems X-Setup. It will take you a good hour or so just to go through all the options, it's very nice. I also hate the new start menu, first thing I dumped and then I went and disabled all the theme services.

I agree with you on the driver issue. Nvidia is falling way behind though. I thought Creative drivers were crap until I started using Nvidia's:devil:

rechteHandDesTeufels,

If you are just into Ripping/Encoding/Playback multimedia and if you have no problem win Win2K, then don't upgrade it. Win2K has proven it is very stable. There are more and more reports that WinXP cause lots of Drivers incompatibility, at least the Home Edition.

If you notice all the major corporation hold off on migrating to WinXP, because of these issues. They are still using Win2K or WinNT 4.0. A lot of them still using WinNT 4.0. :) Really!

I have had XP for about a month, and put it through hell ( .NET, encoding, old programs) and it has stood up to it. The encoding speed is a lot better then ME ( my, :scared: *gasp*, former operating system). All you have to do to super charge XP is to turn everything off, all the fancy menus, and stuff. Go into administative tools > services, and turn everything that you don't need off. Most of the defaults are for a network computer, running on a corperate intranet. The only problem I had was getting drivers for my old 56K modem.

Another thing bout XP is that sometimes it crashes when I exit from CounterStrike. :D

one thing that hasnt been mentioned for + for XP is specifically to do with DVDs:

VMR.

removes the 1 overlay limit for playback, which means you can (theoretically) playback multiple videos at once.

well, i got 3 mpeg-2 clips going at full speed on my radeon using cinemaster 4 (cineplayer/ati mmc 7.5).

I'd say Xteq Systems X-Setup IMHO. It seems to have many more options than any of the other tweak utils.

Hi, my 2 cents, I just upgraded (finally) from Me to XP Pro and I must say that I am very impressed. Very stable OS (nary a single crash), huge performance improvements (my TMPG encodes are twice as fast). I did disable all the fancy shit that it comes with, take out Messenger and other branding stuff, switched to classic (and familiar) Windows interface.

Why XP Pro? Because of Remote Desktop - until you have tried it, you don't know what you r missing. I can connect to my PC at home from work and start/monitor/tweak those long rips/encodes through the day - my wife is happier since when I now go home, all the 'jobs' are already running....

Cheers

plenty of themes out their to download, you just have to pick whether to install windowblinds (yuck) or stylexp (better than wb, but still yuck). luckly, the makers of stylexp have a uxtheme patch to support stylexp themes without actually installing stylexp.
