Hi,

First, let me say I have searched and read the guides, nothing on this.

I have encoded two different avis. One is the complete movie "Office Space", the other is the theatrical trailer for this movie.

I would like to join the files so that the trailer plays, then the movie, but all in one file.

However, when I try to do this in both Nandub and Virtualdub, I get an error message saying "Cannot join files, The video streams have different data formats"

These were both encoded in Nandub. The only difference between them is the resolution: the credits are in 4:3 resolution, while the movie is 16:9.

Is this the reason that Nandub won't join them?

Thats the reason.

Yes avi file joiners are very picky: need same resolution, audio codec, video codec, sampling rate, fps, audio bitrate, and I could go on. The only thing that can differ is the video bitrate. Just reencode the trailer to the same format or create an *.asx file (WMP playlist) in Gordian Knot.

would be nice to have different sreen res in one vid file.
just at a certain point the file should say to the player to change res.
dont think that will be impossible even neither mpg can now do that.

and many bytes saved, since u could go from a horizontal display(es 640x352) to a vertical one (es.288x352) as one scene needs....

programmers, wake up!
