Hello,
I have an AVI and the audio does not play, i did not have any connection problems when i downloaded it.
It does not play in WMP or BS player, Virtual dub says "uknown tag 2000" i extracted it and tried to play it but it did not work and was just corrupted noise sound.
Is there some new format that I dont know about? Normally the files use MP3 audio, i have found several avi's like this reciently.
Any help apprecialted.
I am using win98

Could be AC3 ... even Vorbis.
How big is the file(s)? Is it part of a 2 CD movie rip? Does Vdub say it has 5 channels?

Try checking the Download section of this site ;)
Go to the filters subsection and download whatever looks interesting.
Be sure and get audiofilters.zip in order to playback AC3 audio in AVIs.
If you want to download the latest Vorbis winamp plugin or encoder go to http://www.vorbis.com/
Decode AC3 files by picking up ac3decode from: http://www.ac3dec.com/
An AC3 encoder is going to cost you $$$.

Ok, thanks for the info, i got it to play with audiofilters.zip.
I have only see avis with mp3 or divx audio before
I cant convert it directly with virtualdub, so i am taking a look at ac2decode now.

Glad you got it to work.
Many people use AC3 in their Divx movies now because it is possible to enjoy full Dolby Digital 5.1 sound if you have the equipment to play it back. In your case it looks like the person that ripped the DVD only used the front left and right audio channels.
If you want to demux the AC3 audio you can do that with nandub. Open the file in nandub, set 'AVI audio' and 'Direct stream copy' in the Audio pull down menu. Then click on File and choose 'Save WAV'. Rename the WAV file to *.ac3 and then you can use ac3decode to convert it to a real WAV file (2 ch stereo) if you need to.

Ok, great!
Thanks for the fast reply!
So do many people make divx movies with Ogg audio now?
When i have made some sample films i used divx3.22 is the DIVX4 codec getting more popular now? Perhaps I downloaded a file in that format before

I'm doing all my encodes with Ogg Vorbis now. I use -q0 (~64kbps) for 1CD rips and -q4.99 (~128kbps) for 2CD rips.

If you want Vorbis ( not Ogg ... Ogg is the container ) audio with our movies you have to stop using AVIs .. read the FAQ here http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16964 and Doom9 Guides about mxuing Vorbis and Xvid/DivX into Ogg format ...
HeadAC3he is the transcoder of your choice for now to create the Vorbis audio from your AC3 sound ...

I've got another one for you:
It's an .avi file. Audio doesn't play.
Audio is: 44.1 KHz, 2 Channels, 16-bit.
So it's not AC3 or Vorbis (tried those two anyways - didn't work).
VirtualDub tells me: "Unknown (tag 0161)".
WMP can't find a codec either.
Explorer properties: 64 kBit/s, 16-bit, Windows Media Audio V2
What other audio codecs do people use?
Thanks for the help!

@tangent
Which app are you using to transcode the AC3 @ q0? Are you using any kind of manual channel coupling settings? Just curious.
Thx

Looks like you need 'Windows Media Audio V2' ;)
I would think that newer versions of Windoze audio should be backward compatible with older versions but maybe not.
Anyway, just download the nimo pack and you should be all set: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html
