View Full Version : Framerate difference between DVD and DVD2SVCD

I have a small problem with a newly created SVCD, when I play it back on my player the framerate seems lower than the original DVD?
I searched this section but couldn't see anything similar, also read the FAQ, no hints there.
I have used DVD2SVCD v1.0.6 build4 and v1.0.7 build1
The original source DVD is PAL 16:9 25fps Interlaced, I selected 'smartdeinterlace' in the conversion tab and left the settings alone then test rendered a 3min chapter, burned it to CD-RW and played it in my Kiiro 838, that's when I noticed the framerate difference but the actual video is perfectly OK.
If I play the original DVD it seems to be more 'live' and the video run much smoother than the SVCD version, which appears to run slightly slower and more 'Film' like. I unticked 'progressive' in CCE to see if that would help but no luck, the DVD2AVI entry in the log does not mention Forced Film so I assume it's not enabled as it's a PAL DVD.
Has anyone experienced or knows what this particular problem is related too?

Hi Web Junkie,
did you already try the deinterlace filters for PAL - like "Telecide" or "SeparateFields/SelectEvery" - I only once had a movie I had to deinterlace for correct playback on TV and I used "SeparateFields/SelectEvery" with superb success - Telecide was not available I think in the older version of D2S when I had to do this but can't remember exactly anymore.
Try a chapter with "Telecide" first and then "SeparateFields/SelectEvery" if the first will fail also and see if this helps.

Hi Gerti!
Thanks for replying. I did try the 'SeparateFields/SelectEvery' with v1.0.6 build4 after doing a test and finding the video was totally screwed because it was not automatically detected as interlaced.
I have just done a test with 'Telecide (PAL)' under v1.0.7 build1 and it's still the same? It's obvious something is wrong when you watch the DVD then the SVCD, the difference just stands out a mile.
I can't say I've seen this with other DVD's I or a friend have done previously, they ARE watchable, no doubt, it's just the fact I KNOW something's not right with this one but can't figure out what!
If I open the original VOB's in DVD2AVI and use F5 then F6 to get the stats, I get Aspect: 16:9, Framerate: 25.000 fps, Video Type: PAL, Frame Type: Interlaced.
If I open the AVSEQ01.MPG on the SVCD in DVD2AVI I get Aspect 4:3 (although it plays 16:9 on my player?), Framerate: 25.000 fps, Video Type: PAL, Frame Type: Progressive (that's why I turned progressive off in CCE initially, it then said 'Interlaced' but made no difference).
So it's not 100% like the original! I'm baffled?
The sytem I use is: WinXP Pro, AMD XP1900+, 512mb PC2100 Crucial RAM, Asus Ti200 GF3, 60GB IBM Telesto ATA-100 HD, Soltek MoBO with VIA KT266A Chipset and Lite-On LTD-163 DVD-ROM drive.

Hmmm...
you say it's interlaced? - Then you could try to uncheck "Upper field first" in "Encoder" tab and "Progressiv frames" and "Zigzag scanning order" also.
You could download Bitrate Viewer from (www.tecoltd.com) and load the second *.vob file or any other except for the first and see what is written behind "Field topfirst:" (Yes/No) - if it's "No" then you have to uncheck "Upper field first".
But if you only do a chapter or so for testing - downloading, installing and checking the *.vob files will take as long as trying it.

I tried Bitrate Viewer but it doesn't work under XP  even when I set the compatability to win95/98/me/2000/nt.
One interesting point. My DVD Player has a PAL/NTSC button, if I play the DVD in PAL it's OK, obviously. However, if I switch to NTSC, the picture almost goes full screen BUT, the video then plays EXACTLY like the problem I've described! It's as though I'm playing an NTSC video disguised as PAL??
I just tried unticking 'upper field', 'Zig Zag' and 'Progressive' in CCE, still no luck! Also, when I play the SVCD in NTSC mode, the picture goes slightly SMALLER, not full screen like the DVD did?
It's as though it's encoded the 16:9 picture as 4:3 but kept the aspect as 16:9 then lied about it being PAL when it's really NTSC. Does that make sense?
I think I'll just dump it onto VHS and save the hassle :)

Not to just jump in but, i'm using the bitrate viewer in windows xp pro and it works just fine. Can you try and re download it?

Hi Chainsaw!
You're correct, it does work! My copy had minimized itself under the Windows Taskbar so I couldn't see it? I had to close the Taskbar so I could Maximize it?
This is what it reports for the VOB's:
Num. of picture read: 30781
Stream type: MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR
Resolution: 720*576
Aspect ratio: 16:9 Generic
Framerate: 25.00
Nom. bitrate: 8000000 Bit/Sec
VBV buffer size: 112
Constrained param. flag: No
Chroma format: 4:2:0
DCT precision: 10
Pic. structure: Frame
Field topfirst: Yes
DCT type: Field
Quantscale: Nonlinear
Scan type: Alternate
Frame type: Interlaced
If that helps anybody with my problem.

Hmmm.. I think the problem I'm experiencing is related to deinterlacing the video!
If I don't deinterlace the video and do a test chapter, the video is great when everything is still, but any movement results in the image breaking up into alternate horizontal lines, now I know why I have to deinterlace it!!
Depending on which deinterlace method I use I get similar results, except when I used smartdeinterlace set to Frame-and-Field Differencing this seemed to give the best result so far!
But what do the extra functions of smartdeinterlace do:
Denoise (ticked)
Blend (unticked)
Fast (ticked)
Treshold (10)
Would these help make the video image better!!
