View Full Version : Not in guides-how do I make an exact copy of a single layer DVD (w/ nothing stripped)

Hey all,
thanks for reading. I've been following the guides on this site for a while, and till now I've been content with copying just the main movie with nothing else or stripping out unneeded streams. I'm familiar with the process and have made a fair number of DVDs. But here's my question:

I'm trying to make an *exact* copy of an out of print, single layer DVD called "Lupin III, The Mystery of Mamo". I mean exact. I want the FBI warning, the menus, everything. I already made a copy of just the movie, but I'm doing this for archival purposes more than anything so I really want an exact copy. The disc is less than 4.3 gigs, so I'm ok in that regard. But, when I follow the guides and don't strip anything, somehow I still end up losing the fbi warning and the menu. It's weird that I lose the menu... I don't quite get that one. The disc is strange, however, in that it doesn't go to the menu on insert. Rather, it starts playing the movie. (only one audio and one video stream on disc) Then, you can press the menu button and go to the disc's only menu (chapter selection) from there. But, my attempts hang when pressing "menu" after I go through the guide.

I've been following the "DVD-9 to 2 DVD-5's while preserving menus" guide and doing it for just one disc, but for some reason the menu on this disc doesn't rip according to that method. Plus, I don't get the FBI Warning. I also tried ripping the files and then burning them as is, but then the disc wouldn't autoplay at all.

Any advice/help is most appreciated. I'm stumped with this one.

Rip the entire contents of the DVD with SmartRipper to your HD (under rip method choose backup). Copy all the other folders and contents that are on the DVD to your HD (such as AUDIO_TS or whatever else there is). Then use IFOEdit and load the first IFO file and press the Get VTS Sector button. Burn all folders to a DVD-R with your favorite DVD burning program. That's all!! I've done a few myself and the important thing is to copy all folders and don't add any extra folders. I had one DVD that had no AUDIO_TS folder and I made one and burned it to the DVD-R....... that was a big mistake, it didn't playback in a standalone DVD player because of it.

The simplest method in that case is to create a DVD image with DVDDecryter (a single file image), and burn the image directly.

Sadly that method doesn't always work (from my experience):( . You need to use IFOEdit and Get VTS Sectors for some DVDs or else it wont play on standalone players.

Do you need to repeat the GET VTS thing with ALL of the IFOs in the subdirectory?

Otherwise, there are some titles that have more than 1 vts_*.ifo BEFORe the movie itself...

IFOEdit will automatically load the rest of the IFO files after you do the first one.

To the original poster......

create a folder on your h/d and label it VIDEO_TS

run smartripper and select all files and rip them
to the folder you created (check box if you want copy
to be region free)

When the rip is complete drag & drop the folder into
PrassiPrimoDVD & burn

Simple really......

Thanks guys! It seems to have worked... at least in PowerDVD. I'm loading it into Prassi now and burning! Thanks again!

arrghh... the Smartripper method worked from the HD, but not after it was burned to disc. I'm gonna try the dvd decrypter image file next...

You should've used IFOEdit after you ripped the files to your HD, all you have to do is load the first IFO file and hit the Get VTS Sector button. It only takes 3 seconds to do. The DVD Decrypter method doesn't work all the time.......

If you ripped the complete DVD to a VIDEO_TS and PrassiPrimoDVD
accepted the folder for burning then it is a compliant DVD.

Is the problem therefore more likely your media / player
compatibility ?
