the last sentence of the codec shootoff reads "XviD is already fully ISO compliant, all you have to do is multiplex it into an MP4 stream and it should play". So does this mean I could create a DVD (following othe guide?) using an Xvid movie with an mpeg2 audio stream (mp3 if the player supports it?) and it should play on a standalone dvd player?

No, because DVD players play MPEG2 streams, not MPEG4 streams (as XviD is). If you get a standalone unit that plays MPEG4 streams, you will be in business.
