How did you try to write them to CD? Just plain burning as a data CD or were you trying to do a Video-CD? For the latter the video has to be in VCD-format first or it won't work. The files you downloaded are probably in divx format as you said the extension was avi.
You said you want to play them on your DVD player. This is only possible with VCDs or SVCDs (in case you don't know this means Video-CD and SuperVideo-CD). So you'll have to convert them to either of these formats. Look at Doom9's VCD&SVCD guides how to do it.
But be warned with a conversion from divx to VCD the quality will degrade very much.

i did realise they needed to be in vcd format so i tried to convert them using tmpg but it could not understand the format they were in and would not let me so as you say i have written them as data and they work in my pc fine.
i have also converted a region 1 dvd to divx using flask then using tmpg converted it to vcd split it into sections and tried to write it using easy cd creator but it refused to write so i tried nero with the same results my only thoughts on this are it was because it was copy writed , what do u think ?

Did you stick to VCD specs? Audio/video bitrate, video resolution, audio codec (mp2)?
If you don't have already I strongly recommend to read this (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/avi2svcd.htm) guide.
If you do DVD->VCD conversion it's not adviseable to DVD->Divx first and then Divx->VCD. You will really loose a lot of quality this way. It's much better (and less time consuming) to go directly from DVD to (S)VCD.

first:downloaded clips, whether in avi or mpg often get corrupted with freeze frames or get there indexes all screwed up.this can be corrected in virtualdub as it will rebuild the index and fix some other probs, but it can't copy mpg files.they have to be re-encoded to avi.this way you can be sure you have a stable clip to encode to vcd.
second:to solve your vcd burning problem you need to make sure "MPEG-1 vcd"is selected in the "type"box when using the "mpeg tools"in TMPGenc.this way the proper block size is written to the file and nero with recognise it as a comliant vcd stream.you only need to do this when SPLITTING mpg files ready for burning to vcd.

IF the file is encoded in DivX3.11 you can do it easier using divfix (get it from Doom9's download page).
