Please excuse this newbie question,I have followed the doom9 guide as closely as I can and am sure I have all the DVD2AVI/GKnot steps correct up to this one stumbling block.I am just testing the water in DivX 4.12 encoding using some .vob trailers I found on various sites. No matter what output resolution I select in the Resolution width x height box the bits/(Pixel*Frame) never goes less the 4.XXX As the recommended rate is 0.20 this is WAY too high and I am confused as the input/aspect ratio is correct and cropping has been done.A compressablilty check also never shows anything but a red box.If I proceed and encode the file anyway everything works as it should and I end up with a useable Divx file including video and audio.Any advice would be greatly appreciated as this is the only thing out of the whole process I cannot get my head around..

I'm not pretty sure about this but....
i think that this vob file you are using is to small. if you use instead of 1 cd try to use 300 MB (depence on the size of the vob file)And try it again....:)

When encoding trailers with GKnot you should switch the mode setting in the bitrate tab to 'Calculate Avi File Size'.
This will let u edit the bitrate directly, instead of changeing the desired file size to get a resonable bitrate.

The bits/(Pixel*Frame) are so high beacuse you want a very high output file-size.ie you have a 30MB video file and you want to compress it at 650Mb.IMPOSSIBLE..So either enter the size(for our examples 15MB or less is good) or enter the bitrate(you should check the 'Calculate Avi File Size' box to do this)...

Many thanks for your quick response guys, changing to Calculate Avi File Size has reduced the bits/(pixel*frame) size to a figure that ties in with what i was expecting to see, however I am still struggling to reach the 0.20x mark.On an NTSC 720x480 4:3 trailer with 3466 frames the best ratio compromise I get is 640 x 464 at 0.518 with a -1.0% aspect ratio error.I now see that my initial confusion was due to the short length of my test files and the guides are written with a dvd-rip .vob length in mind.My goal using GKnot is to encode DVB and Dazzle DVC2 Mpeg2 captures to Mpeg4 rather than DVD-Rips and I thought using .vob trailers was a quick way to get a feel for the techniques involved.

NTSC at 640 x 464 resoultion and a bpp value at 0.518, corrosponds to a bitrate of 4610 kbps, if my calculations are correct (assuming framerate 29.97).
Why don't you just enter a lower bitrate ?.
