Hi guys.

I just saw this post in Xvid.org forums, where it is said that divx 5.0 could be the next release, with B-frames support, and maybe a new Virtual Dub like program.

With the current VfW API we will never have b-frames until everything (codecs + editors) are converted to use directshow.

Is the Divx codec not a pure directshow filter ?!?!?!

No, there is a VfW codec too for the tools like VirtualDub. And the directshow codec can only do decoding.

Basicly there are three kind of frames, an I frame (that's "keyframe" in mpeg) can be decoded by itself, a P frame can be decoded using the previous frame and a B frame can be decoded using the previous and the next. To know what's coming next the frames have to be stored/loaded in an exchanged order (e.g. IPBP becomes IPPB in the file), this is where the VfW API fails, it can only process frames sequentially.

There are claims that vidomi and opendivx will be releasing a special version of Vdub for B-frame encoding and I wouldn't be surprised if that is true that the DivX 5 codec can handle b-frames. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Anyone have any input on the validity of such claims?

B-frames support, this is why some encoders wont work with it (except the new version of Virtual Dub released by opendivx and vidomi)

I will be happy, if they solve the problem with dark scenes and water although they don't improve compression or speed.

speed doesn't bother me as long as it can run near realtime on a fast CPU without filtering... What i want is QUALITY :) If this codec increases compressibility then GREAT!!!!!!
