Hi,
I have captured a movie with VirtualDub in full resulution (768x576@25fps).

Now I'm using the deinterlace and resize(480x576@25fps) filter to give CCE 2.5 the Video over the frameserver.

OK, but if I encode the frames are more than bad! There are big blocks in the picture and if there are fast moves you can't see anything!

What settings should I change to get anything around DVD-quality??

At the moment I'm using:
Video Encoding Mode: Multipass VBR
Min. bitrate: 500
Max. bitrate: 2530
Avg. Bitrate: 2450

Playing with the other settings doesn't change anything...

I have some suggestions:

Use the tool FitCD to optimize bitrate, and macroblock resizing.
Check the readme for tips how to use it.

You can also check this guide how to capture: http://www.geocities.com/lukesvideo/

The filters in the guide above is a little bit too strong in my taste for photograpic film, it's optimized for cartoons. But noise filtering can help the encoding quite a bit. I always use temporal smoother and smart smoothing. I also do not deinterlace when encoding SVCD to be played in a standalone player.

In CCE you can try the noise filter set to 2 and quality to 15. Encode a small portion of the movie to see if the field order is correct (you will notice jerky playback in the standalone if not correct). Do not check zigzag scanning when encoding interlaced, and never check linear quantisize when encoding MPEG2. I also set DC precision to 8 to save bitrate.

But I have found that TMPGEnc or LSX gives better quality in my taste than CCE when encoding interlaced material to SVCD. But you have to try for yourself to see what looks best in your opinion.

A big thank you for this informations! Very interesting...
I thing deinterlacing must be, because I also want to whatch the movies on my computer.

Will now test if I can now fix this problem...
