Himage DVD 595 SVCD VCD Play fine including CD-R
Pioneer DV 525 VCD Only but CD-R OK

Moreover:
I've had NO problems with Pioneer DV-525 and SVCD, so I have to disagree on that one. No subtitles though.

That's interesting. I must admit that I have not actually tried to play an SVCD 'cos Pioneer themselves told me that it didn't support SVCD! Unless the UK version is different to others...but thanks for letting me know. I'll now give it a try.
