I am using mkvmerge gui to split a 4.4g mkv file into two. It splits it (original plays fine) but the output files can't be played as I get black screen on the player. I don't get any error messages or anything, just the files won't play.
I never played with mkv files before, the info I followed was straight forward so I don't know what is going on with the output files. Any suggestion?

Start mkvmerge GUI, go into options and tick "Disable header removal compression for [...]". AFTER THAT open the file, mux/split and try playing again.

Are you using the latest version? (5.5.0)
I just tried splitting an MKV into 4 pieces and they all played correctly. At one stage there was a problem splitting files which contained DTS audio, which has since been fixed, but maybe try deselecting all tracks except the video and split it to see what happens, then try again with just the video and audio if "video only" split okay. Then try adding any remaining streams back.....
It's possible you've found a bug when splitting MKVs which only occurs when a particular type of stream is present. Maybe not likely, but possible.

Alright, I was able to split it with only video and audio, if I include subs, the split doesn't work. Is this a bug or are subs supposed to be unselected when splitting mkv files?

Chances are it's a bug. What sort of subtitles are included? Which version of MKVMergeGUI are you using?
I just tried splitting an MKV containing srt subtitles and another containing idx/sub subtitles and both split and played without issue, so maybe it's a problem with just a particular type of subtitle file.
Well here you go.... I was going to provide you with a link to the MKVToolNix thread so you could report the problem, and found this in the process:

If you use the recommended version and still have problems it might pay to report the issue in that thread.
