I just updated to Subtitle Workshop 4 and for some reason every time I load an AVI file with the subtitles the audio and video is there but the subtitles wont move at all and follow the audio. Never had this problem before. Please advise.

You should use v2.51 or 2.52 RC (available here (http://sw.binhoster.com/)).
v4.0 Beta 4 is very buggy (and quite old/unfinished).

I wouldn't delete it though. I've found it can handle some video that the 2.x versions won't.

I've found it can handle some video that the 2.x versions won't.Not really. Handling videos in SW is done by system codecs (via DirectShow).
If you have proper/good ones installed in your system, you should be able to play any video in SW 2.5x as well. (assuming you take into consideration SW bugs w/ its DirectShow usage)
I find SW v2.51 + LAV Filters + ffdshow (w/ raw video processing enabled; needed because of SW bug) to be the best way to work w/ subtitles + videos. Plays anything.

OK I just installed Subtitle Workshop 2.51 and it still wont work. Everything was working perfectly until I reinstalled Windows XP. I'm guessing there is an update I need to download to get these subtitles to follow the audio. This is really odd.

Codecs, dude. Codecs.
LAV Filters in particular.

Do you know what codecs are required? I can't recall ever installing them before I re-installed Windows XP. I just installed Subtitle Workshop and presto everything worked perfectly, the subtitles followed the dialogue without a problem.

Let me explain it in the simplest form:
SW does not have any built-in filters to parse containers or decode audio/video streams.
SW uses DirectShow in order to play videos.
DirectShow is a framework that comes w/ Windows.
Windows XP comes w/ a few pre-installed DirectShow decoders/filters. Xvid (MPEG-4 ASP to be exact; video) is not one of them. Neither is H.264 (video). Neither are MKV or MP4 (containers). Neither are AC3 or DTS (audio).
If you want to be able to play a file that uses one of the above (in SW), you must have a 3rd party DirectShow decoder/filter installed.
It's that simple.
LAV Filters is a great example of free DirectShow decoders you can use. It's fast and supports almost all common formats well.

I've just downloaded LAV Filters 0.50.1 zip. I'll install them and get back shortly. I mainly use Subtitle Workshop to align and adjust subtitles with the dialogue. Thanks Superb for your assistance.

All that is great in theory. But I have both versions of Subtitle Workshop installed. If it doesn't work in one, I use the other. Call me lazy but I don't see a reason to do it another way just to satisfy some theoretical edict.
