Hi Peoples,

I was thinking about purchasing the above tv tuner for my current PC as well as put it into my new PC once built. I have been excited about buying because it supports the h.264 format, but some opinions have delayed my happiness.

Please also see my second question at the end of the Colossus section.

I have read that alot of TV turners have their flaws, and even more so about with their supplied software that comes with the turner. This is no surprise to me. But I have heard that quite a few people are having issues with the current supplied software that comes with hauppauge colossus. But I hope that is not going to stop me from delaying my purchase and going with another much cheaper brand/product.

So here is the deal. I have read that Avisynth can import .ts files that come from ATSC. So my simple question is this: if I can use avisyth to frameserve these sucker .ts files, can I overcome using all of the buggy software altogether? Or can i demux .ts files from the Wintv .ts file and then continue like normal as if I were converting one of my h.264 mp4 files? I handle the pure h.264 files from mp4's using DGAVCindex or even the newest one by Neuron, which I have not got yet. If the answer is YES to all of this, then I will not be disappointed because I could just use it like I would normally to demux a mp4 expect use a different demuxer. I was just wondering if someone has experience with the hauppauge colossus but uses avisynth instead of the supplied software and can tell me through experience that by using avisynth I can overcome all the problems that a person would normally who would just open up the box and use archsoft and drastically fail. Archsoft is the software that comes with it, unfortunately.

And if the answer is YES, then I will still happily purchase this tuner with no doubts in my mind that this is a good tuner to use.

And I do not want to make another super long post, so I will just attach it to this one. So anyone know of a good CANOPUS capture card that is designed for VCR and HD material? I saw at amazon.com that a canopus Acedvio, just the card, was going for for $279, no software. I know the Colossus is more aimed at capturing HDTV, and probably could capture from a VCR as well. But do you think the canopus acedvio is just as good as a Colossus if you were to compare VCR feeds coming through. I have seen used parts on EBAY for the Raptor and some other one's. So what Canopus card would be the best to use with a VCR and be less than a $ 1,000. Would it be the canopus acedvio? Or would it be something else? I do not want to spend $1000 for old technology. But $500 would be OK.

I have the Colossus and use it with Avisynth and my DG tools just as you say. I use the bundled software only for the capture and that is not buggy.

You'll need an AAC audio decoder unless you just remux it.
