View Full Version : HD to DVD workflow (24p > 30i)

Hello,

I have been working on a few projects lately, creating DVD's from an HD source. My question is about going from 24p HD video to DVD--from what I understand, technically, DVD can only support 30i video; however, you can add pulldown flags to allow a 24p-capable player to undo the pulldown and play true 24p video. Is that correct?

My current workflow is this:

I use Adobe Media Encoder to re-encode the 1080p24 source to an uncompressed Quicktime at 480i29.97. I then load the file into Cinevision to do the MPEG2 encode, and give that to Scenarist. It has been working fine, but I'm wondering if the pulldown information gets lost during the Media Encoder conversion, and results in a 30i-only file (thereby losing the possiblity of a 24p player being able to recreate the 24p image).

The reason I have to do the downconverting first is because Cinevision can't do resizing. Do you think it would be better if I use Media Encoder to downconvert to a 24p file, and let Cinevision do the pulldown during the MPEG2 encode? Does anyone know if Cinivision would preserve the pulldown flags that way, or if my current workflow is fine as it?

Thanks for the advice!

CineVision should accept AviSynth files. If you don't need to filter the source, you can feed an AVS that resize your 1080p24 source to a 720x480@24p. If I'm not wrong, CineVision accepts SD 24p files and add soft-pulldown flags on the final encode (if your target is DVD NTSC 59.94i)
