View Full Version : Is WMV really a hunk of junk.

I'm new to this video editting hobbie but I seem to
detect that WMV is the most uncompatible format
in the world. Once you have a video in microsofts
format you are stuck. I can't find any good tools for
editting it or converting it to a format for VCD or DVD.

Here is the deal. I found a program called snap stream
that records shows fairly good. The best thing I like about
it is that it will control my DSS receiver. But WMV is the
only supported CODEC. I would like to archive some shows
on DVD or VCD but I can't for the life of me figure out
how to convert a 1 hour long video segment to something
that is useable.
I've tried many programs but they either don't recognize
the file or they lockup about 5-10 minutes in or the video
is just garbaled. Does anybody know a procedure for doing
this. I'm going nuts.

You could try either AviSynth, or failing that Graphedit (manual & messy but will work)

But these progs aren't for people that are new to video encoding....

Switch to andother codec.

>>SnapStream PVS, enables a user to record their favorite TV shows in an intelligent fashion (a la TiVo/ReplayTV) using a number of codecs including, with the latest release, DivX. PVS support for DivX makes it a pretty cool piece of software for people that like using DivX for recordings.

Look up Snapstream.com to verify this info that I found elsewhere.

Thanks guys, I will try this out. Both actually.
I wasn't aware SnapStream can use divx. I thought
I heard it was windows only.

I haven't Tried AviSynth yet. I let you know how
it goes.
