Hi. Can someone please explain to me what "check RPC2 drive region code when opening a DVD" in DVDShrink preferences does exactly and what implications, benefits, disadvantages, etc. enabling/disabling has?

In particular, how does DVDShrink behave when ...

(1a) ... checkbox=enabled and DVD matches drive region?
(1b) ... checkbox=enabled and DVD mismatches drive region?
(1c) ... checkbox=enabled and drive is flashed to region-free?

(2a) ... checkbox=disabled and DVD matches drive region?
(2b) ... checkbox=disabled and DVD mismatches drive region?
(2c) ... checkbox=disabled and drive is flashed to region-free?

The answer to 1a seems obvious: DVDShrink checks region, region matches, so no problem and happy copying. But what about the rest?

:thanks:

PC DVD drives, to the best of my knowledge can't be multi-region (unless they use hacked firmware, I guess).

From DVD Shrink's help file:
Version 3.1.6 - 23 Feb 2004
Added support to change drive region of RPC2 drives in case of region mismatch with disc.

Version 3.1.7 - 14 March 2004
Added preference option to disable RPC2 drive region checking which solves problems with some hacked firmware.

So it sounds like, and I'm really just guessing, with the option enabled it'll offer to change the drive's region if you try to rip a disc from a different region. I guess if they don't match it can't rip the disc?
I assume you've not tried a disc which is of a different to your drive?

If I'm correct, and you don't want to change drive regions, try using RipIt4Me for the ripping process. You'll find it with Google. It's a GUI which uses DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink to do the actual work (so you'll need to install DVD Decrypter too if you haven't already). It uses the former for the ripping and the latter for the re-authoring/shrinking. I know it'll rip a disc which has a different region to that of the drive, because it pops up with a message telling you it's got to use a brute force ripping method and it might take longer (or something like that). I'm not sure I've ever tried to do the same thing with DVD Shrink on it's own.

RipIt4Me is old and no longer updated, but it still rips 99% of the DVDs I've used it on.
