Got a qustion,
I have been using DVD2AVI in my coversions to DivX, but for some unknown reason, to me anyway, my computer would crash. I tried several times to "fix" what I thought may have been part of the problem... I put the VFAPI Reader Codec 1.04 in the same directory with DVD2AVI...that didn't work...so then I tried deleting the VFAPI Reader Codec 1.04 form the DVD2AVI directory and put it in another folder by itself..to no avail. I have a Pentium III ...733 MHZ...currently running Windows 2000, just switched from XP. When I was running Windows 98 I had no problems with DVD2AVI (wish I could just press reset and start all over, but I think I'm going to stick with 2000 and work these problems out). If you can help please tell me how to get DVD2AVI to work again on my computer. Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Thanks for your reply post.... I never did get DVD2AVI wroking again, mainly because I switched to Xmpeg, but I think I cornered what the problem was. I started using XMPEG for all my conversions...it works great, I get even better quality than I did using DVD2AVI and Virtualdub. I followed the tutorial from this website (doom9.org) and I upgraded to the DivX4 codec. Download all the things it says to on the tutorial. Anyway, so after switching to Xmpeg for my conversions and it worked fine for about 10 conversions, then all of a sudden same problem all over again, my computer would just lock up. Very frustrating, to say the least. So that's when I uninstalled everything, xmpeg, radium mp3, DivX4 codec....evrything possible I uninstalled, since I still had all the zip files for everything I just reinstalled everything and it works great for me now, it's been working good for about 2 months now. I think the key was the DivX codec, I think by uninstalling it and reinstalling it that fixed the problem. If you aren't using the newest DivX codec, DivX4, then I suggest upgrading to it, i think that's why the quality of my DivX movies have improved, I'd say they're almost as good as the real DVD. One other thing, when I didn't have the radium mp3 codec installed it wouldn't let me choose audio higher than like 54kbps, so if you notice that problem then install the radium mp3 codec. Hope all this helps. If you have any more problems or questions feel free to send me an email at watson386@comcast.net (if that email doesn't work then try my old one at watson386@home.com)

:D So, you've finally managed to have your encoding working again : fine !
I've already tried to uninstall and reinstall EVERYTHING, but I'm quite sure it has nothing to do with the divx codec for me. GKnot crashes before encoding...
Thx anyway

well...I know how much it sucks to not be able to encode dvd's to DivX, that's why I'd suggest that you try using Xmpeg. I've never used GKnot so i have no idea about what kind of quality it produces, but I'm now a believer in Xmpeg...the quality is great. The guide for it is under the DivX guides.....DivX4.....Xmpeg. Hope you get something working for you.

I'll try VFAPI or AVSTool some day. :D

If VFapi doesnīt work, switch to Avysinth, itīs not very difficult to learn how to use it.
Question about Xmpeg:
I thought flask (or related programs) are dead, because itīs slow and unstable.
How many FPS do you get on which computer?

What do you mean exactly by switching to Avisynth? You know another reliable method (except GKnot) to transform d2v files into avs ?
By the way I've also read somewhere (probably here !!!) that the Flask method isn't te best one...

"Flask method isn't te best one..."
And I thought that it was the worst method.
to Avisynth:
You can write Avysinth-scripts yourself!
Itīs really easy (Ok not that easy, beat feasable).
Go to google and youīll find you way...
...Oh, cool, I found a guide from doom9 with google:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/d2a-mpeg2dec.htm ;)
OK, thatīs it

Thx !
Just a short sum-up (!)
I used W98SE and Gknot and everything was fine
I installed XP and Smart Ripper didn't detect any ASPI driver (it's ok at this point)
GKnot doesn't open d2v projects anymore (even the ones created before installing XP)
I reinstalled GKnot and I did everything mentionned above but the drive letter stuff (Partition Magic 7 doesn't want to remap my HDrives!)
So I ripp the dvd using SRipper (I'm not sure it's fine)
I use dvd2avi (read below)
I use avstool to make the avs script
VB for encoding...
GKnot was so nice and effective :(
Just one more thing : I discovered yesterday my dvd2avi does strange things : the timestamp is wrong ! For example, the last time is 0:30:45 (when "FINISH" appears) but the movie lasts 2 hours... When I check the total duration of the movie, it's ok. Is there a pb with Smart Ripper (I had to install ASPI because I use XP) ? Under 98, Smart Ripper chooses automatically the right vobs.
Maybe that's the reason why GKnot doesn't want to open d2v projects anymore ? Is it worth sending a project to s.o. ?

dvd2avi has often problems with the timestamp, thatīs no problem. If you want to make a special selection, than make it by looking at the frames you can see in the window.:)
