Okay, I've been working on and off for the last month on getting a good SPR rip, and I've finally done it.

Title: Saving Private Ryan
File Size: 3 CD Rip (2106 MB)
Video: DivX 3 1292 kbit/s (credits DRF 12)
Resolution: 480x272 Neutral Bicubic
Filters: None
Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1

I started off with a first pass set for 2800 megs (the only way I could get around 65% Neutral bicubic at 480x272 w/out filters). Once I had done my 1876kbits/sec first pass, I told GKnot my new Total File Size was 2092 MB (add in the credits and this is 2106 megs), loaded my 1876kbits/sec stats file, calculated a new curve based on my new Total size, and lo and behold my Video Size/First Pass Size was 68.9%, well inside the 60%-100% the guide recommends.

Result:
The detail seems to be pretty damn good. In previous attempts at this rip, I had to lower to ludicrously low resolutions to make 65% soft bicubic, such as 384x208. This means there are only ~80,000 pixels in the output resolution, so it'll look pretty crappy even if you blow it up to fullscreen in 640x480, with lots of detail loss.

480x272 seems to be a good balance. It seems to do fullscreen well at 640x480.

DVD=A screenshot of the resized AVS file pre-DivX encoding.

Try it out; it seems to have worked well for me.

Looks good. Do you know what the size of the movie is on the DVD?

I'm guessing you halved the size. Is that about right?

Well, I have VOB's that contain the video stream and a 5.1 audio stream. All the VOB's put together are 6.37 GB. My 3 CD rip is 2.05 GB.

EDIT~TheWEF, look at 01_DivX and 01_DVD together. On the lower right hand corner, there is something which appears to be graininess; it is absent in 01_DVD. What is this? Artifacting? My bitrate is high enough to avoid artifacting, isn't it?
