Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and DVD ripping in general. I need help reconstructing IFO files from a copied DVD. Long story short, I bought a DVD and because my brother is prone to scratching DVD's and games I decided to back it up on my hard-drive, like I thought the DVD got damaged and when I tried to watch it on my PC I discovered that it could not play properly. After reading a bit and checking I found out that I did not copy the DVD correctly and that the IFO file structure was removed. Is there any way to repair the IFO structure? I tried IFOedit, PGCedit and DVDrebuilder but nothing seems to work, in addition I can't find the DVD anywhere. Any help will be appreciated. :stupid:

Hi!
1) What software and procedures did you use to copy the original, commercial DVD?
2) What is the title and Region number of the DVD?
3) Are you able to play the .VOB files on your pc (from your hard drive)?
I can't find the DVD anywhere. Are you also missing any homework? (Just kidding;>})

Assuming you have all the Vob Files for the movie (delete anything not from the movie itself), IFOEdit can create the needed IFOs and BUPs. Here's a guide:
http://www.ifoedit.com/createifo094.html
and another:
http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/test.htm#ifoedit
And welcome to the forum.

Thanks for repliying guys, I guess I did leave out some info. To clarify, I tried to find the dvd in stores so that I could buy and rip again but no luck. When I ripped the movie I did not know how to use dvd-decrypter yet, I had the "remove ifo structure" box clicked. I would also like to keep all the extras and original menus, which is why ifoedit did not work for me. When I play the movie on pc there are no forced captions and it jumps to other language tracks at different chapters. Any help?

Yep, the original DVDs are required in this case.

If that is the case, is there a dvd re authoring program that I could use?

You can use any of them. But you won't get the original menus, which you said you wanted, not unless you know a lot more than you've shown us so far.
For free authoring programs, GUI4DVDAuthor and DVDAuthorGUI come to mind. For good and inexpensive authoring solutions, try TMPGEnc Authoring Works or DVD-Lab (Pro). Both are try-before-you-buy trialware programs.

I've tried dvdauthorgui but I can't remember enough to recreate the menus nor do I know enough about the structure resolution etc to attempt it, as for dvdlab and tmpgenc the files are way too big for me to download (which is a whole other problem I'm working on) lol. I took another look at the dvd file in ifoedit and everything seems to be there, aren't there any re authoring programes that will allow me to use the original menus or simply repair the ifo's?

You can demux the motion menu(s) and use the video and audio from it in an authoring program, but the buttons will be different. Or, easier, still any motion menus by saving out a pic and make them static. You'll also have to recreate the menu navigation since you don't have any of the original IFOs, but in principle that's not all that hard.

Repair the IFOs? You have no IFOs. There's nothing to repair. Like I said, you can use the video and audio from the original menus, and you'll have to specify the menu navigation (click on this button to go to this next menu, or to this chapter, or whatever). It takes time, and maybe some trial and error on your part.
My advice is to forget about it and be happy the main movie plays OK. You can also recreate IFOs for the extras, or make an AVI or MKV out of them. But you blew it when you screwed up the original decrypting. Live and learn.

That's just the thing, there are ifo's they're just messed up, the title and chapter info is there so are the audio and subtitle information but when I play it everything is mixed up.

It's not really clear whether could not play properly refers to a perfect playback yet in different order, with a false audio tracks, or simply "skips". The latter being due to stratches and dirt, in general reading problems. Repairing IFOs won't help here.

Well basically the main movie plays but when the next chapter plays then either the audio and/or subtittles switches and I can't access extras, I can't open the file in dvdshrink error message reads "failed to open video_ts.vob" it can only open it in re-author mode (I tried creating an iso image file).

@aether To clarify, I tried to find the dvd in stores so that I could buy and rip again but no luck. So once again, I'd ask you - What is the title and Region number of the DVD?
Perhaps, I or some other member can help you locate a source to purchase it from...

It's region 2 and you won't be able to understand the title, it's a localy produced dvd and rather old which means I won't be able to find it in stores.

You can find it in fleamarkets or on ebay.....

No luck, already tried. My only choice is to work with what I have, and if I can't rebuild or repair the ifo's then I need a re-authoring program that can import the existing menus and titles then let me rebuild the structure. Does a program like that exist?

No. Becausae the IFOs define what's inside of a VOB.

Thanks but the chances of finding it again is one in a million, since all other options are exhausted can someone direct me to a guide on pgcedit that will allow me to skip the missing vob files? After checking again I found that in removing the structure protection it stopped dvd-decrypter from copying one or more vob files.
