Im new to blu ray ripping and have started ripping them to 720p Xvid Files with 640Kbps ac3 audio. Ive been ripping dvds for while and usually specify file size depending on how long the movie is and if i want to keep original audio or convert it to mp3 But have no idea what is a normal file size or bitrate for blu ray rips. Do you guys specify file size, bitrates or what. My encodes are usually between 2-3Gbs in file size and between 2000-3000kbps video bitrate. They seem to look ok but if you guys have any tips to make them better. Also do you guys use packed bitstream and quarter pixel? I am currently using MeGui at the moment and would like to stick to xvid and ac3 for now. Thanks for any info.

IMO you're thinking about this wrong--it's about where you end-up not what you start with. If for example you are happy with your current Xvids (bitrate and ultimate hdd size) then stick with that when converting your BDs. They will look better than your DVD encodings because you are starting with a better source.

Any particular reason for that? Are you restricted by your playback device?

At the moment no but I may want to play them on a stand alone player at some point in time.

Also i am currently doing 2 pass encoding but i have read that this is pointless unless you are looking for a specific filesize. I would like to keep them in the 2-4GB range but not really a set filesize, should i keep doing 2 pass encoding?

Hm, I would think that nowadays many standalone players support h.264.
Anyway, your choice but you should know that x264 is much more efficient than xvid.

For that range I would use 2-pass. It's just easier than fiddling with the target quantizer.
