Getting DVD's to BD

I have a few custom authored DVD's, but because I want to throw them out to save space I was thinking about re-author them to a BD50 disk. I want to keep the stuff I created, but don't have original shots :( Did anyone try such procedure before? Is it possible?

Is there some free authoring tool for BD discs ? Or I need to buy/lend that Sonic stuff?
