I'm very excited at publishing the very first public release of DVDx 4!

DVDx 4.0 is free and open-source, targeting Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, today I've published a Windows release fully functionnal, for free download from SourceForge (and VideoHelp, Doom9 further, etc...):

DVDx 4.0 is fueled by MEncoder and FFmpeg.

DVDx 4.0 is an audio/video encoder as well as a powerful DVD copier. You can read DVDs and quiet any audio or video files and encode them to quiet any popular video formats: VCD/CVD/SVCD/DVD, Xvid/Divx, MPEG-4, H.264, AVC, QuickTime, Flash Video, Ogg, WebM, AC.3, WAV, MP3, MP4/AAC, Lossless Audio,
PCM, Vorbis etc.

DVDx 4.0 is very easy to use: open a DVD or file in the player, play it with audio/subtitle of your choice ; encode a short preview in a few seconds and play it to ensure it's what you expect, and then start the whole encoding job which can take about one hour but you're quiet sure to get a very good result!

DVDx 4.0 makes all good choices for you: popular video and audio codecs and appropiate settings (for fair quality, high quality or smaller size files) but you can tune the encoder with your own preferred settings.

Release 4.0.0.0 is the very first public release, don't spend too much time if you don't succeed in running it, I'll publish a new release very soon.

- I'd love, but it's tough. I've in mind to use BD-Rebuilder and integrate with DVDx 4. I'll work on it after summer and give info updates.

- noted, however these weeks we're working to release Linux and Mac OS X builds, then we'll release a Smart Edition which has resolution, audio sampling, audio and video bitrates.
- about profiles and resolution: the major issue is that encoder engines (FFmpeg, MEncoder) and formats (video codecs) don't support any values. Our policy is to provide only resolutions that are supported to avoid annoying error messages to average users. We need some time to gather feedbacks and improve engines error handling, then we may relax profiles and rezolutions.
- Framerate: changing framerate is tough because of maintaining audio synchro. I don't think it's very useful to change framerate, do you?
- WebM: we've started to compile VP8 encoder on Linux, I guess I'll start testing soon and will integrate in DVDx 4, this summer.

I'm very happy to announce the very first release of DVDx for Linux platforms!

Linux users were expecting DVDx for a long time and they had to wait the completely re-written DVDx 4 versions. DVDx 4 Linux editions offers same GUI with same features as the Windows versions. There's a limitation, due to FFmpeg/MEncoder, the Linux edition supports less output formats, we've to disable 3GP/3G2, iPod, PSP, MP4 audio files and MP4/AAC audio codec. Nevertheless Linux users are able to encode in a bunch of video formats;

MPEG-1/MPEG-2 (VCD, xVCD, SVCD, CVD, DVD)
Ogg Vorbis


and audio formats: AC-3, AU, MP3 and WAV.

We aren't use to package Linux applications for Debian or Ubuntu distros, so we've release DVDx 4.0 in a Linux i386 self-installer.

We encourage Windows users to upgrade to 4.0.0.1 for the improvements and the new MPlayer engine which displays subtitles correctly.

Version 4.0.0.1: bug fixes & display improvement

Features:
- reduced AAC bitrate (better quality alignment with MP3 half bitrate)
- added AAC HQ profiles with high bitrates to HD movies
- added MP3 Low Rates to replace AAC Low Rates on Linux

Code:
- change preferred audio codecs for 3GP/3G2 formats
- add mp3_flv virtual codec for 44.1khz high profile in FLV format
- disable AAC audio and 3G2/3GP, iPOD (M4A/M4V) formats on Linux
- add source name display in encoding progress widget
- apply QProcess::close() method to all Qprocess on stack (avoid segment fault in linux/macx)
- use -vframes and -aframes FFmpeg options for encoding preview

- main.pro fixed to compile on Linux

- fix (Windows) mixing subtitle display in player (change MPlayer to Sherpya-SVN-r30369-4.2.5)

- what do you mean?
A zip/rar/..-package version or similar that doesn't need to be installed.

Also wondering: "Why do you include the VC++ 10 .pdb files with the source code,.. " (I mean they are relatively large and one has to rebuild them anyway,..)

Portable version: I've added to the wish list, but I've to think before deciding because I'll have to maintain 4 distribution files (win32+macx+linux+src) which will be 7 if I do "portables"... And when we'll release the Smart Edition, will be 8 or 14...

PDB files: oops! shouldn't be in there, I'll correct.

New in 4.0.0.2 release: first Mac OS X release and first Debian package for Linux

Yes DVDx 4 can remove copy protection, however for some licensing reason, the Linux package doesn't contain the libdvdcss2 but one can downbload and install it further.

The Windows installer contains libdvdcss.dll, but could be removed easily.

And yes, a reading at DVDx homepage does the trick ;)

Looks nice, wanted to try, but only one audio stream selectable? (At least two streams should be selectable, making this program much more useful for nowadays encoding tasks...)

Agreed multi-audio and multi-subtitle is required nowadays and is planned for DVDx 4, I guess in the next couple of months because I've to improve movie access before (4.0.0.2 too often fails at loading DVD or large files, so I'm working on it and few other issues).

- set default player latency started/finished to 5000ms instead of 3000ms
- restart after installation to display icon in /Applications

And yes, it will be bluray support.
