I know there's a way to identify the encoder (be it SW or HW), but I cannot find this info any longer, neither here nor in the internet.

Is anyone so kind to remind me what I did know once?

for sure not based on user data - doubt on possibility to identify encoder based only on compressed video data...

Simple answer, you can't. Some encoders write their signature in the user data header but most MPEG2 streams are anonymous.

HW encoders do AFAIK. Just I don't remember how I did it or which SW I used for (there are some 10 years since I've done it for the last time).

ReStream and GSpot both can shows userdata tags if available. Sometimes you can use also an HEX Editor.
